AK TREND ID v1.00
Jul 3, 2014

The AK TREND ID indicator provides a systematic trend-following framework by calculating the spread between two moving averages to identify broad market direction and momentum shifts.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used, particularly for identifying long-term market cycles in indices like the SPX or SPY. The indicator functions by analyzing the relationship between a fast and a slow Exponential Moving Average (EMA).
- Bullish Trend (Buy Signal): When the spread value is greater than 0, the indicator and bars plot green, suggesting a positive trend.
- Bearish Trend (Sell Signal): When the spread value is less than 0, the indicator and bars plot red, suggesting a negative trend.
Users typically monitor the indicator at the end of a monthly period to confirm trend changes. Because it is a lagging indicator, it is designed to capture the "meat" of a move rather than predicting exact market tops or bottoms.
Details
The script calculates the difference between a 3-period and 8-period EMA (defaulted for monthly timeframes). This spread is then multiplied by a small constant (1.001) for scaling purposes.
Historically, this methodology was tested on the SPX from 1984 to 2014, showing a high win rate by following the green (positive spread) phases. The logic aims to remove emotional bias from investment decisions by providing a binary visual representation of market momentum. While originally optimized for the S&P 500, the logic can be applied to other assets to determine structural trend changes.
Settings
- Fast EMA Length: Determines the period for the shorter moving average. A lower value makes the indicator more sensitive to recent price changes.
- Slow EMA Length: Determines the period for the longer moving average. A higher value provides a smoother trend line but increases lag.
FAQ
How do I interpret the zero-line crossovers? A crossover above the zero line indicates that short-term momentum is overtaking long-term momentum, signaling a potential entry. A crossunder below the zero line signals that momentum is weakening, suggesting a potential exit.
Can this be used on lower timeframes? While designed for monthly charts (M) to identify macro trends, the settings can be adjusted for weekly or daily timeframes to suit different trading styles.
