The Trend Following Long Only Strategy indicator is a trend-tracking tool designed to identify and capitalize on bullish market trends while exiting positions during bearish cycles.

Usage

The strategy is primarily used to automate or signal entries into long positions when a positive trend shift is detected. A buy signal occurs when the smoothed price crossess above a calculated volatility-adjusted threshold, indicating that upward momentum is establishing. Conversely, the strategy closes the position when the price trend falls back below the center line or switches to a bearish state.

Traders can use the visual fills on the chart to gauge the current market state:

  • Green Fill: Indicates a bullish trend where the price is trading above the upper boundaries.
  • Red/Neutral Fill: Indicates a bearish or transitionary period where it is safer to stay out of the market.

Details

The strategy logic is built upon a smoothed lookback mechanism. It calculates the highest highs and lowest lows over a defined period (default 200 bars) to establish a trading range. These values are then smoothed using an Exponential Moving Average (EMA) to reduce market noise.

To determine trend entries, the tool applies an Average True Range (ATR) multiplier to the center of this range. This creates a volatility "buffer" zone. A trend is confirmed as bullish only when the price breaks above the center plus this volatility offset, ensuring that minor fluctuations do not trigger false entries.

Settings

  • Lookback Length: Sets the period used to calculate the highest highs and lowest lows for the price range.
  • Smoother Length: Determines the length of the EMA used to smooth the range boundaries and trend calculations.
  • ATR Length: The period used for calculating the Average True Range to determine market volatility.
  • ATR Multiplier: A multiplier applied to the ATR value to define the distance of the upper and lower bands from the center line.

FAQ

How do I interpret the signals on the chart? A buy signal is triggered when the trend component crosses above zero, and the strategy closes the position when the trend falls back below this threshold.

Can this strategy be used for shorting? This specific script is a "Long Only" strategy, meaning it is designed to enter long positions in bull markets and move to cash during bear markets rather than opening short positions.
