The RSI + MA Strategy indicator provides a comprehensive backtesting framework that combines the Relative Strength Index with a Simple Moving Average to identify potential market reversals and momentum shifts.

Usage

The strategy is primarily used to identify entry points based on the interaction between the RSI line and its Moving Average. By default, a Long position is triggered when the RSI crosses below the MA, while a Short position is triggered when the RSI crosses above the MA.

Users can also utilize the "Use Reverse Trade" feature to swap these conditions, allowing for trend-following or mean-reversion styles depending on the asset and timeframe. The integration of two indicators into a single oscillator pane helps reduce chart clutter and streamlines the decision-making process.

Details

The strategy calculates a standard Relative Strength Index (RSI) using a Relative Moving Average (RMA). A Simple Moving Average (SMA) is then applied to the RSI values. The core logic relies on the crossover and crossunder of these two lines.

The inclusion of an offset parameter for the MA allows traders to shift the average forward or backward in time, which can be useful for compensating for lag or aligning signals with specific market cycles. The strategy also includes built-in upper (70) and lower (30) bands to help visualize overbought and oversold regions alongside the MA crossovers.

Settings

Inputs

  • Use Reverse Trade?: When enabled, the entry conditions for Long and Short positions are swapped.
  • RSI Length: Determines the lookback period for the RSI calculation.
  • RSI Source: Selects the price data used for the RSI (Close, Open, High, Low, etc.).
  • Show MA: Toggles the visibility of the Moving Average line on the oscillator.
  • MA Length: Sets the lookback period for the Simple Moving Average applied to the RSI.
  • MA Offset: Shifts the MA line horizontally on the chart.

FAQ

How do I use the Reverse Trade function?

The Reverse Trade function allows you to flip the strategy logic. If the default crossover signals are producing counter-trend results, enabling this setting will swap the Long and Short entry triggers.

Can I change the overbought and oversold levels?

While the bands are visually set at 70 and 30, the strategy logic focuses on the interaction between the RSI and the MA rather than specific fixed levels. You can adjust the visual style of these bands in the "Style" tab.
