4 EMA Crossover w/alerts
Aug 27, 2020

The 4 EMA Crossover w/alerts indicator tracks four distinct exponential moving averages to identify trend shifts and provide visual buy/sell signals based on relative positioning. This tool is designed to help traders filter noise and identify high-probability trend changes by requiring multiple moving averages to align relative to a long-term baseline.
Usage
The indicator is used to identify bullish and bearish trend cycles through the interaction of four EMAs. A "Buy" signal (B) is generated when the three shorter-term EMAs (MA1, MA2, MA3) all cross and hold above the longest-term EMA (MA4). Conversely, a "Short" signal (S) is triggered when the three shorter EMAs fall below the long-term baseline.
Common configurations include:
- Low Timeframes (LTF): Utilizing periods such as 8, 13, 21, and 55 to capture faster price fluctuations.
- High Timeframes (HTF): Utilizing periods such as 21, 55, 100, and 200 to identify institutional trends and significant market shifts.
Details
The script calculates four separate Exponential Moving Averages (EMAs). The core logic relies on a state-switching mechanism to ensure signals are not repeated during the same trend cycle. A bullish state is established only when the first three moving averages are greater than the fourth; a bearish state is established when they are all lower than the fourth. Signals are plotted on the chart at the exact bar where this transition occurs.
Settings
- MA1: Sets the length for the first (typically shortest) exponential moving average.
- MA2: Sets the length for the second exponential moving average.
- MA3: Sets the length for the third exponential moving average.
- MA4: Sets the length for the fourth (typically longest) exponential moving average, acting as the primary trend filter.
FAQ
What are the best lengths to use for this indicator? While the default settings are 8, 13, 21, and 55, users often adjust these based on their timeframe. Shorter periods are better for scalping, while longer periods like 100 and 200 are preferred for daily or weekly trend analysis.
How do the alerts work? Alerts are triggered once per bar close whenever a new Buy or Short signal appears on the chart, allowing for automated monitoring of trend crossovers.
