Ultimate Moving Average Bands
Aug 17, 2021

The Ultimate Moving Average Bands indicator provides a dynamic volatility-based envelope system that utilizes adaptive logic to identify trend strength and potential price reversals.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to interpret market trends and volatility. Users can utilize the bands to identify overextended price action or the beginning of strong momentum shifts.
- Trend Identification: The bands change color based on the relationship between price and the adaptive moving average. Green bands indicate bullish sentiment, while red bands indicate bearish sentiment.
- Signal Strength: The indicator distinguishes between standard and strong signals using color saturation. Darker green or red colors represent strong momentum, while lighter shades represent normal trend conditions.
- Volatility Reversals: Price moving above the upper band or below the lower band can signal an extremely strong trend or a potential mean-reversion point.
- Bar Coloring: When enabled, the chart bars will match the color of the bands to provide a cohesive visual representation of the current trend state.
Details
The Ultimate Moving Average Bands are an evolution of the Ultimate Moving Average (UMA) developed by cheatcountry and RedKTrader. Unlike standard Bollinger Bands that use a fixed length, this tool employs an adaptive calculation for the basis and the bands.
The core logic uses a dynamic length that adjusts based on where the price sits relative to a standard deviation-based range. It further incorporates a modified Money Flow Index (MFI) or Relative Strength Index (RSI) to calculate an "Accelerator" factor. This factor influences the weighting of the moving average, making it more responsive during high-momentum periods and smoother during consolidation. The final bands are then projected from this adaptive UMA using a standard deviation multiplier.
Settings
General Settings
- Source: Determines the price data used for the calculations (default is Close).
- Resolution: Allows the indicator to be calculated on a different timeframe than the current chart.
- Allow Repainting?: Toggles whether the indicator uses data from the current unconfirmed bar when using a higher timeframe resolution.
- Allow Bar Color Change?: Enables or disables the changing of candle colors based on the indicator's signals.
Calculation Settings
- Accelerator: Adjusts the sensitivity of the adaptive weighting logic. Higher values increase responsiveness.
- MinLength: The minimum period allowed for the adaptive calculation.
- MaxLength: The maximum period used for the adaptive calculation and standard deviation basis.
- SmoothLength: Sets the period for the final WMA smoothing applied to the UMA.
- Multiple: The standard deviation multiplier that determines the width of the upper and lower bands.
FAQ
How do I interpret the different colors on the bands?
Darker colors (Strong Green/Red) indicate high-momentum moves or "strong" signals, while lighter colors (Weak Green/Red) indicate standard trend conditions or potential weakening momentum.
What is the difference between this and standard Bollinger Bands?
Standard Bollinger Bands use a fixed lookback period. The Ultimate Moving Average Bands use an adaptive lookback and a variable weighting system (Accelerator) based on market volatility and volume flow.
