The 30min Opening Range (w/Extensions) indicator identifies the price range established during the first 30 minutes of the trading session and projects various extension levels based on its volatility. This tool helps traders visualize key support and resistance zones derived from early market activity, providing structural context for the remainder of the trading day.

Usage

The tool is primarily used to identify breakouts or mean-reversion opportunities relative to the initial 30-minute balance.

  • Opening Range: The shaded area represents the high and low established during the specified opening time (default is 09:30-10:00 EST).
  • Extensions: The script plots four extension levels above (1A-4A) and four below (1B-4B) the range. These levels are calculated based on the distance from the range high/low to the midpoint, serving as potential profit targets or reversal zones.
  • RTH High/Low: The indicator also tracks the high and low of the Regular Trading Hours session, allowing traders to see how the current price action relates to the broader session extremes.

Details

The script calculates the Opening Range (OR) by tracking the maximum high and minimum low during the user-defined session window. Once the window closes, these values are locked and projected forward.

The extensions are unique in their construction: they use the "half-width" of the range (the distance from the high or low to the midpoint).

  • Midpoint (ORM): (OR High + OR Low) / 2
  • Extension Unit: OR High - OR Midpoint
  • Upper Extensions: OR High + (Extension Unit * n)
  • Lower Extensions: OR Low - (Extension Unit * n)

Settings

  • Opening Range Time (EST): Defines the start and end time for the opening range calculation.
  • Regular Session Time (EST): Sets the time window for tracking the session high and low. This can be adjusted to include overnight data if desired.

FAQ

How do I access the 30min Opening Range (w/Extensions)?

You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.

What is the default timeframe for this indicator?

While the range is typically set for 30 minutes, the indicator can be used on any intraday timeframe (1m, 5m, 15m, etc.) as long as the "Opening Range Time" input covers the desired period.

Can I change the extension calculations?

The extensions are hardcoded to use the distance between the range extreme and the midpoint. To change the multiplier or logic, you would need to modify the underlying Pine Script code.
