MACD WEIGHTED
Jan 5, 2018

The MACD WEIGHTED indicator is a trend-following momentum oscillator that utilizes Weighted Moving Averages (WMA) instead of the standard Exponential Moving Averages (EMA) to provide faster response times to price action. By applying shorter default periods and the front-weighted nature of WMAs, this tool aims to identify potential trend reversals and momentum shifts with reduced lag compared to the traditional MACD.
Usage
The Usage of the MACD WEIGHTED indicator follows similar principles to the standard MACD but with a focus on increased sensitivity. Traders can interpret the indicator through the following methods:
- Signal Line Crosses: A bullish signal is generated when the MACD Weighted line crosses above the Signal line. Conversely, a bearish signal occurs when the MACD Weighted line crosses below the Signal line.
- Zero Line Crosses: When the MACD Weighted line moves above the zero line, it indicates that the shorter-term WMA is above the longer-term WMA, signaling bullish momentum. Movement below the zero line signals bearish momentum.
- Divergences: Discrepancies between price action and the MACD Weighted peaks or troughs can suggest weakening momentum and potential trend exhaustion.
Details
Unlike the traditional MACD (12, 26, 9) which uses Exponential Moving Averages, this version employs Weighted Moving Averages. WMAs assign more importance to recent data points in a linear fashion, making the calculation more reactive to current price changes. The default settings are also optimized for speed:
- Fast Period: 8 bars
- Slow Period: 13 bars
- Signal Period: 5 bars
This combination of shorter periods and WMA weighting allows the indicator to react significantly faster to market volatility than the standard settings, which may be beneficial for scalping or short-term trend following.
Settings
- Fast Period: Determines the lookback period for the fast Weighted Moving Average.
- Slow Period: Determines the lookback period for the slow Weighted Moving Average.
- Signal Period: Sets the smoothing period (using WMA) for the MACD line to create the Signal line.
FAQ
How do I use the MACD WEIGHTED indicator?
You can use it to identify momentum shifts and trend directions by watching for crossovers between the MACD line and the Signal line, or by monitoring the MACD line's position relative to the zero level.
How does this differ from the standard MACD?
The standard MACD uses Exponential Moving Averages and typically longer timeframes (12, 26). This version uses Weighted Moving Averages and shorter default periods (8, 13) to provide quicker signals with less lag.
