Bollinger Bands Breakout Strategy
Aug 25, 2020

The Bollinger Bands Breakout Strategy indicator is a trend-following tool that identifies potential entry points based on price breaches of volatility-defined upper and lower bands.
Usage
The indicator identifies two primary signals based on price action relative to the Bollinger Bands:
- Long Entry: Occurs when the price closes above the upper Bollinger Band.
- Short Entry: Occurs when the price closes below the lower Bollinger Band.
The strategy is particularly effective during periods of high volatility or following a "Bollinger Band Squeeze," where a breach suggests a potential trend breakout. Users can filter the types of trades executed via the "Trade Type" setting (Longs Only, Shorts Only, or Both). It is recommended to use this tool in conjunction with other indicators like Volume or RSI to confirm the strength of the breakout.
Details
This script is a strategy implementation of the Bollinger Bands Filter. Bollinger Bands traditionally consist of a 20-period Simple Moving Average (SMA) with upper and lower bands plotted 2 standard deviations away. This specific version defaults to a more conservative 55-period SMA and a 1.0 standard deviation to focus on medium-term trend shifts.
The strategy includes a backtesting window, allowing users to define a specific date range (From Day/Month/Year to To Day/Month/Year) to analyze historical performance.
Settings
- Source: The price data used for calculation (default is Close).
- SMA Length: The lookback period for the basis Simple Moving Average.
- Standard Deviation: The multiplier for the volatility bands; higher values require more significant price moves to trigger signals.
- Trade Type: Filters the strategy to execute "Longs Only," "Shorts Only," or "Both."
- Color Bars: Toggles the bar coloring based on price relationship to the bands and basis line.
- Time Range Settings: A group of inputs to define the start and end dates for strategy backtesting.
