The SuperTrend MTF indicator provides a multi-timeframe perspective of the classic SuperTrend trend-following tool, allowing traders to monitor trend alignment across six different timeframes simultaneously on a single chart.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify trend direction and potential reversal points. Traders can use this tool to ensure they are trading in alignment with higher-timeframe trends or to identify precise entry points when multiple timeframes converge.

  • Trend Identification: When the price is above the SuperTrend line (colored green), it indicates a bullish trend. When the price is below the line (colored red), it indicates a bearish trend.
  • Multi-Timeframe Confirmation: By looking at the six additional SuperTrend lines, a trader can wait for "trend confluence"—where multiple timeframes show the same color—to increase the probability of a successful trade.
  • Dynamic Support and Resistance: The SuperTrend lines act as trailing stop-loss levels or dynamic support/resistance zones depending on the current market direction.

Details

This implementation goes beyond the standard SuperTrend by offering extensive customization for the underlying calculations. While the standard SuperTrend relies on a simple Average True Range (ATR) and a multiplier, this version allows users to select from 15 different calculation methods for the ATR component (e.g., EMA, ZeroLag EMA, Hull MA, etc.).

The multi-timeframe (MTF) functionality uses the request.security function to fetch data from higher timeframes. The indicator also includes a label system that identifies which line corresponds to which timeframe at the end of the chart for easier visual interpretation.

Settings

Main Settings

  • Source: Determines the price source used for calculations (default is hl2).
  • ATR Multiplier: The factor by which the ATR is multiplied to set the distance of the trend line from the price.
  • ATR Period: The lookback period used to calculate the Average True Range.
  • Calculation Method: Allows users to change the moving average type used for the ATR calculation. Options include RMA, EMA, ZeroLag EMA, DEMA, TEMA, SMA, Smooth SMA, Hull MA, Triangular MA, SuperSmooth MA, LSMA, WMA, VWMA, VWAP, and Blackman Filter.

Timeframes

  • 1st - 6th Timeframe: Users can define six distinct timeframes (e.g., 15m, 1h, 4h, 1D) to be plotted on the current chart.

FAQ

How do I use the multi-timeframe lines?

You can look for alignment between the shorter-term trend and the longer-term SuperTrend lines. When the current price crosses above or below these lines, it can signal a change in trend for that specific timeframe.

Can I change the sensitivity of the indicator?

Yes, by adjusting the "ATR Multiplier" and "ATR Period," you can make the indicator more or less sensitive to price fluctuations. A lower multiplier will follow the price more closely but may result in more false signals.
