MACD-X, More Than MACD by DGT
Aug 24, 2020

The MACD-X indicator is a multi-variant momentum tool that expands upon the traditional MACD by integrating advanced calculation techniques, volume-based data sources, and volatility squeeze detection. It provides traders with more responsive trend identification and momentum analysis by offering alternatives like MACD-Leader and MACD-Source to reduce traditional lagging effects.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify trend shifts and momentum exhaustion. Users can select from five distinct calculation modes and five different data sources (including price and volume metrics) to tailor the oscillator to specific market conditions.
- Signal Line Crossovers: Similar to a standard MACD, when the MACD-X line crosses the Signal-X line, it indicates a potential trend acceleration. Bullish crossovers suggest upward momentum, while bearish crossovers suggest downward momentum.
- Zero Line Crossovers: When the MACD-X line crosses above or below the zero level, it confirms a change in the mid-to-long-term trend direction.
- Divergence: Discrepancies between price action and the MACD-X oscillator can signal potential reversals. For example, a "bullish divergence" occurs when price hits a new low but the MACD-X makes a higher low.
- Volume-Based Analysis: By switching the source to OBV or Accumulation/Distribution, the tool transforms from a price oscillator into a volume flow oscillator, helping to identify if a trend is supported by buying or selling pressure.
Details
The script implements several advanced interpretations of Gerald Appel's original concept:
- MACD-Traditional: The classic difference between a 12 and 26-period EMA.
- MACD-Histogram: Based on Thomas Aspray’s work, this version measures the distance between the MACD and its signal line to anticipate crossovers.
- MACD-Leader: Developed by Dr. Giorgos Siligardos, this uses less-laggard moving averages to lead the standard MACD at critical trend changes.
- MACD-Source: An experimental mode evaluating the source-to-MA ratio to provide earlier crossovers and clearer momentum direction.
- MACD-TRIX: A triple exponential moving average momentum oscillator designed to filter out market noise.
The indicator also includes a Squeeze feature based on Bollinger Bands and Keltner Channels to identify periods of low volatility (compression) followed by high volatility (expansion).
Settings
Main Settings
- MACD Calculation Mode: Selects the engine (Traditional, Histogram, Leader, Source, or TRIX).
- Source: Defines the input data (Close, HLC3, OBV, AccDist, or PVT).
- Fast/Slow/Signal Length: Configures the lookback periods for the internal moving averages.
- Show Traditional MACD: Overlays the standard MACD on the chart for direct comparison with MACD-X.
- Enable Histogram Threshold Bands: Plots deviation-based bands to identify overextended momentum.
- Use Exponential Moving Average: Toggles between EMA and SMA for internal smoothing.
Add-Ons
- Enable Squeeze: Activates volatility compression detection.
- Enable RSI-Based MACD Coloring: Changes histogram colors when RSI reaches overbought or oversold zones.
- Enable Volume-Weighted Price Bars: Colors chart candles based on volume relative to its moving average.
Backtest Framework
- Enable Backtest: Activates a built-in simulation to test strategies.
- Trade Mode: Choose between Long Only, Short Only, or Both.
- Stop Loss %: Sets a percentage-based exit for risk management.
FAQ
How do I interpret the 4-color histogram? The histogram uses four colors to show momentum strength: bright colors represent increasing momentum (bullish or bearish), while dark colors represent fading momentum.
What is the benefit of using MACD-Leader over Traditional? MACD-Leader assigns more weight to recent price changes, allowing it to react faster to trend shifts and potentially leading the traditional MACD during reversals.
How can I access the MACD-X indicator? You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
