RSI direction bias
Feb 26, 2020

The RSI direction bias - JD indicator identifies prevailing market trends and potential pullback opportunities by analyzing RSI levels relative to user-defined thresholds. It serves as a comprehensive trend filter and entry signal tool for traders looking to align their positions with momentum.
Usage
The indicator can be used to determine the general market bias and identify specific zones for potential trade entries.
- Trend Filtering: When the RSI crosses above the Top Level (e.g., 60), the bias shifts to bullish. When the RSI crosses below the Bottom Level (e.g., 40), the bias shifts to bearish.
- Pullback Detection: In a bullish bias, a pullback is identified when the RSI dips back below the Top Level but remains above the Bottom Level. In a bearish bias, a pullback occurs when the RSI rises above the Bottom Level but stays below the Top Level.
- Visual Cues: The indicator changes the color of the RSI line and the background area to reflect the current bias. Optional bar coloring can be enabled to highlight these phases directly on the price chart.
Details
The script offers two distinct calculation methods for the RSI:
- Regular RSI: Uses the standard Relative Strength Index calculation based on the selected source.
- Future Smoothed RSI: Utilizes Heikin-Ashi open and close values to create a smoother RSI output that anticipates potential shifts by averaging the current and previous bar's synthetic open prices.
The logic relies on a "sticky" bias state; once a threshold is crossed, the bias remains in effect until the opposite threshold is breached, helping traders stay in the trend despite minor fluctuations.
Settings
- Source: Determines the input data used for the RSI calculation (e.g., Close, HL2, OHLC4).
- RSI Type: Selects between 'Regular RSI' and 'Future Smoothed RSI'.
- RSI Length: Sets the lookback period for the RSI calculation.
- Top Level: Defines the threshold for a bullish bias shift.
- Bottom Level: Defines the threshold for a bearish bias shift.
- Color Bars?: When enabled, colors the price bars based on the current bias and pullback state.
FAQ
How do I interpret the colored areas?
The primary colored area indicates the current bias (green for bullish, red for bearish). Faded areas between the RSI line and the levels represent pullback zones where price might be retracing against the main trend.
What is the advantage of the Future Smoothed RSI?
The Future Smoothed RSI uses Heikin-Ashi data to reduce noise, potentially providing a cleaner trend signal and reducing whipsaws in choppy market conditions.
