The Smooth Accelarating RSI indicator is a refined long-term momentum oscillator that delivers a smoothed Relative Strength Index while maintaining responsiveness to accelerating market trends.

Usage

The Smooth Accelarating RSI is designed for traders who prioritize long-term structural analysis and cleaner signals. By reducing the noise inherent in standard RSI calculations, it helps identify meaningful trend transitions without the volatility of shorter-term oscillators.

  • Trend Identification: The indicator uses Upper and Lower Thresholds to determine bullish or bearish bias. When the RSI line crosses the Upper Threshold, it signals a potential bullish trend; conversely, a drop below the Lower Threshold indicates a bearish shift.
  • Momentum Acceleration: A built-in momentum histogram (centered at level 50) helps traders detect acceleration or deceleration phases. Increasing histogram height suggests strengthening momentum, while a decrease may signal trend exhaustion.
  • Value Zones: Overbought and Oversold thresholds define potential exhaustion zones. These can be used to locate pullback opportunities within a larger trend or to identify extreme market conditions.
  • Visual Cues: The script includes visual trend labels ("Long"/"Short") and colored candles to provide intuitive feedback on current market momentum.

Details

Unlike traditional RSI logic which relies on a single smoothing pass, the Smooth Accelarating RSI blends multiple layers of smoothing with adaptive acceleration. It calculates primary gain/loss averages and then applies a secondary square-root length smoothing to capture both fast and slow momentum components. The final "Smooth Accelerating" calculation ensures the oscillator remains stable during consolidation but reacts quickly when price momentum begins to expand.

Settings

Smooth Accelarating RSI

  • Source: The price data used for the RSI calculation (e.g., Close, HL2).
  • RSI Length: The primary lookback period for the RSI calculation.
  • Smooth Accelarating: The length of the final smoothing layer applied to the indicator.

Moving Average

  • MA Type: Selects the smoothing method used throughout the indicator (RMA, SMA, EMA, WMA, DEMA, TEMA, HMA, or ALMA).

ALMA Only

  • Offset: Controls the Gaussian distribution offset for the ALMA smoothing (0.85 default).
  • Sigma: Controls the standard deviation (width) of the ALMA distribution (6.0 default).

Thresholds

  • Upper Threshold: The level at which a bullish trend bias is confirmed.
  • Lower Threshold: The level at which a bearish trend bias is confirmed.
  • Overbought Threshold: The upper level identifying potential high-value exhaustion zones.
  • Oversold Threshold: The lower level identifying potential low-value exhaustion zones.

FAQ

How do I use the momentum histogram in this indicator?

The histogram tracks the change in the smoothed RSI values. When the histogram is above 50 and rising, it indicates accelerating bullish momentum. If it falls toward 50, it suggests the trend may be weakening.

What is the advantage of using HMA or ALMA for the MA Type?

Advanced smoothing methods like HMA (Hull Moving Average) or ALMA (Arnaud Legoux Moving Average) reduce lag more effectively than standard SMAs, allowing the Smooth Accelarating RSI to react faster to price turns while still filtering out noise.
