The Moving Average Trend indicator provides a comprehensive trend-following framework that utilizes customizable moving average clouds and ribbons to identify momentum shifts and trend exhaustion. It allows traders to visualize trend strength through multiple MA layers and sequential counting filters.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify market direction and potential reversals.

  • Trend Identification: The primary trend is determined by the Cloud. When the short-term MAs are above the long-term MAs, the cloud typically indicates an uptrend. Green and red arrows signal "trend flips" based on the crossing of the first and eighth moving averages in the cloud.
  • Signal Dots: Small circles appear on the chart to indicate secondary momentum signals. By default, these use a cross of the 2nd and 6th Cloud MAs.
  • Ribbon Confirmation: The Ribbon offers a second layer of trend analysis with eight additional MAs. Users can toggle the "use ribbon for cross" setting to change how signal dots are calculated, switching the logic to the 1st and 2nd ribbon MAs.
  • Sequential Counting: The numbers 1–9 appear above/below bars to track trend persistence. A yellow sequence number suggests an "overextended" trend, providing a visual cue for potential exits or periods of consolidation.

Details

The indicator is built upon several core components:

  • MA Cloud: Comprised of 8 short-term moving averages with lengths 2, 6, 11, 18, 21, 24, 28, and 34.
  • MA Ribbon: A secondary set of 8 moving averages with default lengths 6, 13, 20, 28, 36, 45, 55, and 444.
  • Sequence Logic:
    • Buy Setup: Current close > close 4 bars ago.
    • Sell Setup: Current close < close 4 bars ago.
    • Exhaustion (Yellow): Occurs when the current close is lower than the previous two closes (for sells) or higher than the previous two (for buys) during late-stage counts.
  • Versatility: The script supports 20 different moving average types, including advanced variations like Jurik (JMA), Kaufman (KMA), and Fractal Adaptive Moving Averages (FRAMA), allowing for significant customization of lag and smoothing.

Settings

General Settings

  • Source: Determines the price data used for MA calculations (default is OHLC4).
  • Cloud/Ribbon MA Type: Select from 20 different MA algorithms for each component.
  • Theme: Changes the visual appearance and fill colors of the clouds.
  • Show Cross: Toggles the visibility of the trend flip arrows.
  • Use ribbon for cross: Switches the signal dot logic from the Cloud MAs to the Ribbon MAs.

Sequence

  • Show sequence: Enables or disables the 1–9 trend counting labels.
  • Lookback: Sets the comparison interval for the sequential count (default is 4).

MA Specific Groups

  • FRAMA (FC/SC): Controls the fast and slow constants for the Fractal Adaptive Moving Average.
  • KMA (Fast/Slow): Controls the smoothing constants for the Kaufman Moving Average.
  • MA Cloud/Ribbon: Individual inputs to define the lengths of all 16 moving averages used in the script.

FAQ

How do I interpret the yellow numbers in the sequence? Yellow numbers indicate that the trend is becoming overextended according to the sequential logic, which may suggest a cooling-off period or a potential reversal.

Can I use different MA types for the Cloud and the Ribbon? Yes, the script allows you to independently select the MA type for the Cloud and the Ribbon, enabling combinations like an EMA cloud with an HMA ribbon.
