Variable Moving Average Bands
Jan 2, 2015

The Variable Moving Average Bands indicator provides a volatility-adjusted envelope system that utilizes a Variable Moving Average (VMA) as its baseline to identify trend direction and potential price extremes.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify trend shifts and volatility expansions. Traders can use the central VMA line to determine the current trend bias, while the upper and lower bands act as dynamic support and resistance levels.
- Trend Identification: When the VMA is rising (often highlighted by color changes if enabled), it indicates an uptrend. Conversely, a falling VMA indicates a downtrend.
- Volatility Envelopes: The bands expand and contract based on the Average True Range (ATR). Price interacting with the upper band may indicate overextended bullish momentum, while price interacting with the lower band may indicate overextended bearish momentum.
- Breakouts: A price close outside of the bands can signal a strong volatility breakout or the start of a new trend phase.
Details
The script is constructed using a Variable Moving Average (VMA) as the core smoothing mechanism. Unlike a standard Simple Moving Average, the VMA adjusts its sensitivity based on market volatility or trend strength, allowing it to remain closer to the price during trending periods and flatten out during consolidations.
The bands are calculated by adding and subtracting a multiple of the Average True Range (ATR) from the VMA. This ensures that the envelope width is proportional to recent market volatility. The calculation involves deriving a Volatility Index (vI) based on directional movement (pdm/mdm), which then determines the smoothing factor for the final VMA value.
Settings
- VMA Length: Determines the lookback period for the Variable Moving Average calculation and the ATR-based bands.
- Bands Multiplier: Sets the width of the envelopes by multiplying the ATR value; higher values result in wider bands.
- Show Trend Direction: Toggles whether the VMA line changes color based on its current slope (rising vs. falling).
- Color bars based on Trend: When enabled, the chart bars will be colored to match the VMA trend direction for easier visual analysis.
FAQ
How do I interpret the VMA color changes? If the "Show Trend Direction" setting is enabled, the VMA line turns green when the slope is positive (upward trend) and red when the slope is negative (downward trend).
What is the difference between these bands and Bollinger Bands? While Bollinger Bands use standard deviation from a Simple Moving Average, VMA Bands use the Average True Range (ATR) from a Variable Moving Average, which may offer more responsive smoothing in volatile markets.
How can I access the Variable Moving Average Bands? You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
