MACD Aspray Hybrid Strategy
Sep 26, 2025

The MACD Aspray Hybrid Strategy indicator is a trend-following system that utilizes a dual-layered smoothing process of the traditional MACD histogram to identify high-probability long entry and exit points.
Usage
The strategy is primarily designed for "Long Only" setups, focusing on momentum shifts that occur when the indicator is below the zero line.
- Long Entry: A buy signal is generated when the MACD Aspray Line crosses above the Aspray Signal Line while the values are below zero. This indicates a potential bullish reversal from an oversold momentum state.
- Exit: A sell signal is triggered when the MACD Aspray Line crosses back below the Aspray Signal Line, suggesting that the immediate bullish momentum has exhausted.
Traders can use the color-coded histogram columns to visualize the absolute strength of the momentum, while the visual triangle markers on the oscillator pane highlight the specific execution points.
Details
This strategy builds upon the classic MACD framework developed by Gerald Appel but introduces a secondary layer of signal processing inspired by the "Aspray" method.
- MACD Construction: The script calculates the standard MACD Line (difference between Fast and Slow EMAs) and its Signal Line.
- Aspray Line: Instead of simply using the MACD line, this script treats the difference between the MACD and its signal (the histogram) as a new baseline, referred to here as the Aspray Line.
- Hybrid Signal: A secondary Exponential Moving Average (EMA) is then applied to the Aspray Line to create a smoother "Aspray Signal Line."
By trading the crossovers of these two derived lines specifically in negative territory, the strategy attempts to filter out minor fluctuations and capture significant trend shifts.
Settings
- Fast EMA: Sets the period for the fast Exponential Moving Average used in the initial MACD calculation (Default: 12).
- Slow EMA: Sets the period for the slow Exponential Moving Average used in the initial MACD calculation (Default: 26).
- MACD Signal EMA: The smoothing period for the standard MACD signal line (Default: 9).
- Aspray Signal EMA: The smoothing period for the secondary signal line applied to the Aspray/Histogram values (Default: 9).
FAQ
How do I interpret the colors on the histogram?
The green columns indicate that the Aspray Line is above the zero level, suggesting positive momentum, while red columns indicate negative momentum below the zero level.
Can this strategy be used for shorting?
The current implementation is optimized for long-only entries specifically when the histogram is below zero; however, the logic can be manually adapted for shorting by reversing the crossover conditions above the zero line.
