Volatility Band Long Only Reversal Trading System
Jun 6, 2019

The Volatility Band Long Only Reversal Trading System indicator identifies potential bullish reversals by monitoring price interactions with dynamically calculated volatility bands. It is designed to capture long entries when price pierces and then recovers from oversold volatility levels.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify market entries and exits. The primary logic follows a three-step price action confirmation:
- Long Entry (BUY): Triggered when the price first closes below the lower volatility band, followed by a close back above the lower band, and finally a third candle closing above the previous candle's close.
- Exit/Short Signal (SELL): Triggered when the price closes above the upper volatility band, followed by a close back below the upper band, and a third candle closing below the previous candle's close.
This system is particularly effective in trending markets where temporary dips below volatility thresholds often precede a continuation of the primary trend or a significant mean reversion.
Details
The indicator constructs volatility-adjusted bands around an Exponential Moving Average (EMA) of the price.
- Volatility Calculation: It calculates a "typical" deviation based on the relationship between current price action and previous lows.
- Bands Construction: The bands are derived from a smoothed average of this deviation. The upper band uses a standard deviation factor, while the lower band includes an additional adjustment parameter to allow for asymmetrical volatility tracking.
- Mean Line: A Simple Moving Average (SMA) of the median price is provided as a baseline for trend direction and potential profit targets.
Settings
- Source: The price data used for all calculations (default is HLC3).
- Band Average: The length used for the smoothing of the median price and the volatility deviation.
- Volatility Period: The lookback period used to calculate the price deviation.
- Deviation Factor: A multiplier that determines the width of the bands relative to calculated volatility.
- Lower Band Adjustment: A specific multiplier used only for the lower band to fine-tune sensitivity for long entry signals.
FAQ
How do I interpret the BUY signals?
A BUY signal appears when price action confirms a reversal from the lower band. This requires a "pierce" below, a "recovery" above the band, and a higher close for confirmation.
Can this be used for shorting?
While the script is named "Long Only," it does include SELL signals based on symmetrical logic at the upper band. These can be used as exit points for long positions or as potential short entry points depending on your strategy.
