Gator Trader Bands
Jul 8, 2021

The Gator Trader Bands indicator is a technical analysis tool that replaces the traditional Simple Moving Average in Bollinger Bands with a Hull Moving Average (HMA) to provide a more responsive measure of price volatility, support, and resistance.
Usage
The Usage section focuses on identifying trend direction and potential overextension points. Because the HMA reduces lag compared to a standard SMA, the bands react more quickly to price pivots. Traders can use the indicator to:
- Identify Support/Resistance: The upper and lower bands act as dynamic levels where price may react.
- Spot Overextensions: When price moves significantly outside the bands, it may indicate an overextended trend prone to a mean reversion toward the HMA basis.
- Trend Confirmation: Trading consistently above or below the HMA basis can signal the prevailing short-to-medium term trend direction.
Details
This script modifies the classical Bollinger Band formula by substituting the basis calculation. Standard Bollinger Bands use an SMA as the mean; however, this script utilizes the Hull Moving Average (HMA). The HMA is designed to reduce lag while maintaining smoothness, which essentially "tightens" the bands' reaction to recent price action. The volatility component (Standard Deviation) remains calculated over the same lookback period to maintain the statistical integrity of the bands.
Settings
- Length: The lookback period used for both the Hull Moving Average calculation and the Standard Deviation.
- Source: The price data point used for calculations (default is Close).
- StdDev: The multiplier for the Standard Deviation, which determines the width of the bands.
- Offset: Shifts the plots forward or backward in time on the chart.
