VWAP Stdev Bands
Nov 2, 2015

The VWAP Stdev Bands indicator provides a Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) calculation paired with customizable standard deviation bands to help traders identify potential mean reversion opportunities and overextended price levels.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used. Traders typically use the VWAP Stdev Bands to identify equilibrium and volatility extremes during intraday sessions.
- Mean Reversion: When the price reaches the upper or lower standard deviation bands, it may be considered overbought or oversold relative to the volume-weighted average, suggesting a potential move back toward the central VWAP line.
- Trend Confirmation: Price staying consistently above or below the VWAP line can indicate the prevailing intraday trend direction.
- Breakouts: Aggressive moves beyond the bands can signal high-volatility breakouts, which are often accompanied by automated alerts for price crossing the upper or lower boundaries.
Details
The script calculates the Volume Weighted Average Price by accumulating the product of price (HL2) and volume, then dividing by the total accumulated volume for the session. The standard deviation is derived using the variance of price relative to volume, ensuring the bands adjust dynamically based on market volatility. The indicator resets its calculations at the start of every new trading session (daily), making it specifically designed for intraday timeframes.
Settings
- Number of stdev: Determines the multiplier applied to the standard deviation calculation. Increasing this value widens the bands, while decreasing it brings them closer to the VWAP line.
FAQ
How do I use the VWAP Stdev Bands on higher timeframes? This indicator is designed specifically for intraday charts as it resets at the start of each new trading day. It will not provide meaningful data on daily or weekly timeframes.
What price source does this indicator use? The script uses the HL2 price (the average of the High and Low) weighted by volume to calculate the central VWAP and its corresponding bands.
