RSI & MACD Exit Indicator
Mar 16, 2025

The RSI & MACD Exit Indicator tool identifies potential trend exhaustion points to assist traders in managing and closing existing positions. By combining momentum and trend-following metrics, it highlights specific areas where a trend may be losing steam, providing clear visual exit signals.
Usage
This script is specifically designed for exit strategies rather than trend entries. It generates signals based on the confluence of the Relative Strength Index (RSI) and the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD).
- Exit Long Signals: These appear when the RSI is in overbought territory (above the user-defined upper border) and the MACD line crosses below the signal line. This suggests that upward momentum is fading.
- Exit Short Signals: These appear when the RSI is in oversold territory (below the user-defined lower border) and the MACD line crosses above the signal line. This suggests that downward momentum is exhausting.
Traders can use these signals to scale out of positions or close them entirely. The indicator also features background coloring to highlight bars where exit conditions are met, and force-overlay labels to display "Exit Short" or "Exit Long" directly on the price chart even if the indicator is in a separate pane.
Details
The indicator calculates a standard RSI and MACD based on user inputs. The logic requires two conditions to be met simultaneously to trigger an exit label:
- Momentum Extremes: The RSI must be beyond the specified thresholds (e.g., 65 for longs or 35 for shorts).
- Trend Reversal Confirmation: A MACD crossover must occur, serving as a secondary confirmation that the immediate trend direction is shifting.
By requiring both conditions, the indicator filters out premature exits that might occur using RSI or MACD in isolation.
Settings
- RSI Length: The lookback period used for the RSI calculation.
- MACD Line Length: The period for the fast EMA in the MACD calculation.
- MACD Signal Line Length: The period for the slow EMA in the MACD calculation.
- RSI Lower Border Value: The threshold below which a bullish MACD cross will trigger an "Exit Short" signal.
- RSI Higher Border Value: The threshold above which a bearish MACD cross will trigger an "Exit Long" signal.
- Label Settings: Allows users to customize the colors of the Buy (Exit Short) and Sell (Exit Long) labels and text.
FAQ
How do I use the signals from this tool?
This indicator is optimized for exits. When an "Exit Long" label appears, it indicates a potential area to take profits on a long trade. When an "Exit Short" label appears, it indicates a potential area to cover a short trade.
Can I use this for entries?
While the logic identifies reversals, the settings are specifically tuned for exit timing. Using it for entries may require additional confirmation or different threshold settings to ensure a favorable risk-to-reward ratio.
