VWAP Oscilator
May 24, 2022

The VWAP Oscilator indicator provides a momentum-based perspective on price movements by calculating the difference between two Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) periods. It aims to help traders identify momentum shifts and potential reversals by incorporating volume directly into a standard oscillator format.
Usage
The Usage of the VWAP Oscilator is similar to that of the Awesome Oscillator (AO), but with a focus on volume-weighted data. It appears as a histogram centered around a zero line.
- Momentum Direction: When the histogram is above the zero line, it indicates that the short-term volume-weighted price is higher than the long-term average, suggesting bullish momentum. Conversely, values below the zero line suggest bearish momentum.
- Color Changes: The histogram bars change color based on the slope of the oscillator. A brighter green indicates rising momentum above zero, while a darker green suggests momentum is beginning to fade. A bright red indicates falling momentum below zero, while a lighter red suggests the bearish momentum is slowing.
- Zero Line Crosses: Crossing above the zero line can be interpreted as a bullish signal, while crossing below can be seen as a bearish signal.
Details
The script functions by calculating two distinct custom VWAP values based on user-defined short and long periods. Unlike traditional moving average oscillators that only account for price, this tool weights the price by volume over the specified window. The final output is the difference between these two values: Short VWAP - Long VWAP. This construction ensures that price movements occurring on high volume have a more significant impact on the oscillator's reading than those on low volume.
Settings
- Short Period: Defines the lookback length for the faster Volume Weighted Average Price calculation (Default: 21).
- Long Period: Defines the lookback length for the slower Volume Weighted Average Price calculation (Default: 89).
FAQ
How do I use the VWAP Oscilator?
You can use it to identify momentum trends and potential reversals. Look for zero-line crossovers for trend signals and color changes to identify when momentum is accelerating or decelerating.
What makes this different from the Awesome Oscillator?
The standard Awesome Oscillator uses simple moving averages of the median price. The VWAP Oscilator replaces these with volume-weighted averages, making the indicator more sensitive to price action supported by significant trading volume.
