Support and ResistanceVolume BasedLiquidity

The Footprint lite indicator provides a visual representation of volume distribution at a granular level, allowing traders to monitor buy and sell pressure within individual bars. It segments price action into specific rows using high-resolution 1-second data to identify order flow imbalances and value areas directly on the chart.

Usage

The Footprint lite indicator is used to analyze the internal structure of price bars by displaying volume at specific price levels. Traders can use it to identify "Imbalances," which occur when the buying volume at one price level significantly exceeds the selling volume at the diagonal price level (or vice versa).

Key usage scenarios include:

  • Identifying Order Flow Imbalance: Highly aggressive buying or selling is highlighted visually, helping traders spot potential exhaustion or breakout points.
  • Value Area Analysis: The tool calculates the Point of Control (POC), Value Area High (VAH), and Value Area Low (VAL) for each bar, showing where the majority of trading activity occurred.
  • Stacked Imbalances: When multiple imbalance levels occur consecutively, the script can extend lines forward, marking significant support or resistance zones.

Details

The indicator utilizes lower timeframe data (1-second resolution) to reconstruct the volume profile of the current ticker. It calculates buy and sell volumes by comparing the closing price of each 1-second sub-bar to its previous close.

The Row Size logic determines how price is grouped; a smaller "Ticks Per Row" provides higher granularity, while a larger value consolidates data. The Imbalance calculation uses a diagonal comparison method, evaluating the bid/ask relationship between adjacent price steps to detect aggressive market participants.

Settings

Display

  • Count show bars: Determines the number of historical bars for which the footprint will be calculated and displayed.
  • Display all available bars: When enabled, the indicator attempts to calculate the footprint for all bars available in the current chart view.

Row size

  • Ticks Per Row: Manually sets the price interval for each footprint row based on the symbol's minimum tick.
  • Auto: Automatically calculates the optimal row size to ensure the footprint fits within a readable number of rows.
  • Max row: Sets the maximum number of rows allowed per bar when using the "Auto" mode.

Imbalance

  • Imbalance Percent: The percentage threshold required to trigger an imbalance highlight (e.g., 300% means buying volume is 3x higher than selling volume).
  • Stacked levels: The required number of consecutive imbalance rows needed to draw an extended trend line.

Value area

  • Value area: The percentage of total volume used to calculate the Value Area High and Low.
  • POC/VAH/VAL: Toggle visibility and colors for the Point of Control and Value Area boundaries.
  • Show Volume Profile: Displays a horizontal volume distribution within the bar.

FAQ

How do I interpret the colors in the footprint?

The colors typically represent the volume delta or the relationship between buy and sell pressure at that specific price level, with highlighted cells indicating detected imbalances.

Can I use this on any timeframe?

While it can be applied to various timeframes, it is most effective on intraday charts where 1-second data provides enough detail for meaningful volume distribution analysis.
