Opening Range/Initial Balance
May 24, 2023

The RD Opening Range/Initial Balance indicator identifies the high, low, and midpoint of the first hour of trading to establish key daily reaction levels and targets.
Usage
The tool highlights the "Initial Balance," traditionally defined as the first 60 minutes of the trading session. Traders use these levels as "dual magnets" that can both attract and repel price action. By observing price behavior at the Opening High (OH), Opening Low (OL), and Midpoint (Mid), users can determine if the market is respecting these levels as support or resistance.
Key usage scenarios include:
- Target Zones: Utilizing the range boundaries as profit targets for intraday trades.
- Reaction Zones: Identifying potential reversals when price interacts with the OH or OL levels.
- Session Context: Monitoring price action during the cash market and Globex/Overnight sessions to gauge market bias.
Details
While the term "Opening Range" is often associated with the first 15 or 30 minutes, this script adopts the term for the first 60 minutes of trading, more technically known as the Initial Balance (IB). The IB represents the period where the market seeks to establish its value area for the day.
The script includes a built-in Data Panel that provides statistical context:
- Today: The current day's opening range value.
- W-Avg: The average range for the current week.
- 20D CA-OH: The count of daily closes above the Opening High over the last 20 trading days.
- 20D CA-OL: The count of daily closes below the Opening Low over the last 20 trading days.

Can I change the opening range duration?
Yes, by modifying the "Opening Range Session Time" in the settings, you can adjust the window to reflect a 15-minute, 30-minute, or any other preferred opening range period.
