The Volume Aggregation Bars indicator is a volume-based candle visualization tool designed to illustrate how price evolves after a fixed amount of trading activity has occurred. Instead of building candles from fixed time intervals, this tool constructs bars based on specific volume thresholds, ensuring each candle represents a comparable amount of market participation.

Usage

The Volume Aggregation Bars can be used to study price movement through the lens of activity, effort, and efficiency. Traditional time-based candles (e.g., 5-minute) close regardless of market activity, whereas these bars only complete once the required volume is reached.

Key features and interpretations include:

  • Market Participation: Each candle reflects a similar amount of traded volume, helping to normalize data across different periods.
  • Directional Coloring: Candles are colored based on whether the close is above or below the previous volume block's close.
  • Efficiency Analysis: The script adjusts candle transparency based on movement efficiency. A "clean" move with significant price progress relative to its range appears solid, while "choppy" or low-progress moves appear faded.
  • Real-Time Tracking: A developing candle and a volume progress table help you see exactly how much volume remains before the current block completes.

Details

The script utilizes lower-timeframe (LTF) data requests to track volume accumulation with higher precision than the chart timeframe alone. When a volume threshold is met, it records the high, low, and close for that specific volume block.

One unique implementation is the "Dollar-Volume" mode. Since raw volume units can vary significantly between assets (e.g., 1,000 shares of a $500 stock vs. 1,000 shares of a $1 stock), this mode converts volume into its dollar equivalent to provide a more standardized measure of liquidity and participation across different markets.

Settings

  • Use Lower Timeframe Volume: Enables the use of LTF data to improve the accuracy of volume block boundaries.
  • Lower Timeframe: Sets the specific timeframe used for volume aggregation (e.g., 1-minute).
  • Auto Volume Aggregation: When set to "Auto," the script estimates a useful threshold based on recent activity.
  • Required Volume: Manually define the fixed volume amount needed to form each new candle.
  • Set As Dollar Amount: Treats the required volume input as a total dollar-value instead of raw units.
  • Show Wicks: Displays the high and low reached during the volume block.
  • Blocks To Show: Adjusts how many historical volume bars are rendered on the chart.
  • Time Label Size: Changes the size of the date/time labels shown on each block.
  • Show Volume Table: Toggles a real-time table showing cumulative volume and remaining volume required for the next bar.

FAQ

How do I interpret the transparency of the bars? Transparency represents price efficiency. Solid bars indicate strong directional moves, while more transparent bars indicate that price fluctuated significantly within the volume block but made little net progress.

Can I use this on any asset? Yes, but the "Dollar Amount" setting is particularly recommended when switching between high-priced and low-priced assets to maintain consistent participation metrics.
