The SuperTrend Oscillator indicator transforms the classic SuperTrend trend-following tool into a volatility-normalized oscillator to highlight momentum extremes and potential trend reversals. By measuring the distance between price and the SuperTrend baseline and standardizing it via ATR, this tool provides a clear perspective on trend strength and exhaustion levels across different market conditions.

Usage

The SuperTrend Oscillator can be used to identify several market states:

  • Trend Strength Identification: When the oscillator is above 0, it confirms a bullish SuperTrend regime; readings below 0 confirm a bearish regime. A rising oscillator indicates expanding bullish momentum.
  • Spotting Momentum Extremes: The built-in thresholds at ±1.7 act as overextended zones. When the oscillator reaches these levels, price is statistically stretched, increasing the probability of a pullback or reversal.
  • Reversal Diamonds: These markers appear when momentum shifts sharply from extreme zones. A diamond above the oscillator suggests a bearish pivot, while a diamond below suggests a bullish pivot.
  • Visual Context: The indicator applies gradient coloring to both the oscillator line and the price bars. Red/Orange tones signify bearish momentum, while Green/Cream tones signify bullish momentum, with gray representing low-momentum transitions.

Details

The indicator functions by extracting a standard SuperTrend baseline using ATR-based volatility. It then calculates the raw difference between the closing price and this baseline. To ensure the oscillator remains consistent across different assets and timeframes, this difference is divided by the current ATR (multiplied by the user-defined factor), creating a "Volatility-Adjusted" signal. This signal is then smoothed using a selectable moving average (HMA, EMA, or SMA) to filter out noise.

Settings

  • SuperTrend Settings:
    • ATR Multiplier: Controls the distance of the SuperTrend baseline from price. Higher values result in a slower, more trending response.
    • ATR Length: The lookback period used to calculate volatility for the SuperTrend engine.
  • Oscillator Settings:
    • Oscillator Type: Choose between HMA (Hull Moving Average), SMA (Simple Moving Average), or EMA (Exponential Moving Average) for the signal smoothing.
    • Oscillator Smooth: The period used to smooth the final oscillator line.
  • Colors:
    • Up Color: Defines the color for bullish regimes and positive momentum.
    • Down Color: Defines the color for bearish regimes and negative momentum.

FAQ

How do I interpret the Reversal Diamonds?

Reversal diamonds appear when the oscillator makes a significant pivot (comparing current value to 3 bars ago) while in overextended territory. They are designed to highlight exhaustion points rather than trend continuations.

Can I use this for trend-following or mean reversion?

The tool supports both. The zero-line crossovers assist with trend-following, while the ±1.7 extreme zones and reversal diamonds are tailored for mean-reversion strategies.
