The ADX with Color like MACD Histogram indicator provides a visual enhancement to the standard Average Directional Index by applying a color-coded histogram to track trend strength and momentum shifts. It aims to help traders identify when a trend is accelerating or decelerating by comparing the current ADX value to the previous bar, similar to the behavior of a MACD histogram.

Usage

The indicator can be used to manage existing positions and identify potential trend exhaustion.

  • Trend Strength Identification: When the ADX is above the limit level (default 20), the bars turn blue. A bright blue bar indicates the trend is strengthening (ADX is rising), while a light blue bar suggests the trend momentum is slowing (ADX is falling).
  • Adding to Positions: Traders often use the transition to a rising blue bar as a signal to add to winning positions during a confirmed trend.
  • Ranging Markets: When the ADX is below the limit level, the bars appear in gray scales, indicating a weak trend or range-bound market behavior.
  • Trend Exhaustion: If the ADX crosses above the max level (default 40), the background turns red. This warns that the trend may be overextended and could soon lose its thrust, signaling a potential time to take profits.

Details

The ADX (Average Directional Index) is calculated based on the smoothed moving average of price range expansion over a set period. Unlike standard ADX plots that use a single line, this implementation uses a column style with four distinct color states:

  1. Growing Above Limit: ADX > 20 and current ADX > previous ADX.
  2. Falling Above Limit: ADX > 20 and current ADX < previous ADX.
  3. Growing Below Limit: ADX < 20 and current ADX > previous ADX.
  4. Falling Below Limit: ADX < 20 and current ADX < previous ADX.

Settings

  • ADX Length: The lookback period used for the ADX calculation (default is 14).
  • ADX Limit: The threshold level that defines the start of a "strong" trend (default is 20).
  • ADX Max: The exhaustion threshold where the trend is considered overextended (default is 40).
  • Show Background Color Current Timeframe?: Toggles the red background highlight when the ADX exceeds the max level.

FAQ

How do I interpret the color changes?

The colors represent the relationship between the current trend strength and the previous bar. Blue indicates a strong trend (above 20), and the brightness indicates whether that strength is increasing (grow) or decreasing (fall).

What timeframes are best for this tool?

While it can be used on any timeframe, it is particularly effective on the 1-hour and 4-hour charts for identifying and riding long-term trends.
