The RSI TREND FILTER indicator scales the Relative Strength Index (RSI) directly onto the price chart to simplify trend analysis and reveal hidden divergences without the need for a separate oscillator pane. By normalizing RSI values relative to price action, this tool helps traders identify market bias and potential overextended conditions while avoiding common traps associated with traditional oscillators.

Usage

The indicator translates RSI levels into price-based zones and clouds. Traders can use the following interpretations for market analysis:

  • Uptrend Identification: A bullish trend is indicated when the RSI cloud or price action remains above the central RSI 50 level (plotted as a moving average).
  • Downtrend Identification: A bearish trend is signaled when the RSI cloud or price action resides below the central RSI 50 level.
  • Sideways Markets: When price action oscillates within the gray "ZeroBand" area surrounding the 50 level, it suggests a lack of clear momentum or a ranging market.
  • Overbought/Oversold Conditions: The tool plots specific levels corresponding to traditional RSI extremes (e.g., 80/20 or 100/0). Areas highlighted in pink represent overbought zones, while green areas represent oversold zones, aiding in the identification of potential reversals.
  • Crossovers: The interaction between the Adjusted RSI and its moving averages can be used to trigger alerts for trend shifts.

Details

The RSI TREND FILTER functions by taking the standard RSI (default 14) and adjusting it using the Average True Range (ATR). This adjustment allows the oscillator value to be expressed in price units, making it possible to overlay it directly on the candlesticks.

The central "50 level" is calculated using a long-term EMA (RSI 50 level setting), creating a dynamic baseline that adapts to price volatility. The various bands (Levels 2, 3, and 5) are then projected from this baseline using ATR-weighted multipliers to represent the standard RSI thresholds (30/70, 20/80, etc.) in an overlay format.

Settings

  • Show RSI Cloud: Toggles the visibility of the filled area between the adjusted RSI and its baseline.
  • Show RSI Mid Band: Displays the central band (gray area) representing the neutral zone around the 50 level.
  • Show RSI Levels: Toggles the visibility of the horizontal-like grid lines representing different RSI thresholds.
  • RSI Length: The lookback period for the standard RSI calculation (default is 14).
  • RSI 50 level: The length of the EMA used to establish the central trend baseline.
  • RSI EMA Length: The length of the fast EMA applied to the adjusted RSI.
  • RSI LEVEL 2/3/5: Multipliers that define the width of the different overbought and oversold bands relative to price volatility.

FAQ

How do I use the RSI TREND FILTER to find trend reversals?

Look for price moving into the highlighted Overbought (pink) or Oversold (green) zones combined with a crossover of the RSI Fast MA against the central RSI 50 baseline.

What does the RSI Cloud represent?

The cloud shows the momentum gap between current price strength and the long-term average. A green cloud suggests bullish momentum, while a red cloud suggests bearish momentum.
