ADX Divergence and Gap Monitor
Apr 19, 2025

The ADX Divergence and Gap Monitor indicator is a momentum analysis tool designed to identify imbalances between trend strength and directional movement using the Average Directional Index (ADX) framework. It provides visual cues for sudden volatility spikes and exhaustion phases by monitoring the relationship between ADX, DI+, and DI-.
Usage
This tool is used to pinpoint market phases where momentum is either accelerating rapidly or diverging from price action. Traders can use it to:
- Identify Early Breakouts: When a "GAP" label or highlight appears, it indicates a sharp increase in directional movement while ADX is still low, signaling a potential early-stage momentum burst.
- Spot Trend Dominance: Green background fills highlight periods of strong bullish dominance (DI+ overpowering DI-), while red backgrounds highlight strong bearish dominance.
- Filter Noise: By observing the ADX color, users can gauge the overall trend strength; neutral or red ADX lines suggest weak trending environments where gap signals might be more prone to noise.
Details
The script calculates the standard Average Directional Index components (ADX, DI+, DI-) using Wilder’s smoothing (RMA). It goes beyond standard interpretation by implementing two specific logic layers:
- Gap Detection: Triggers when the change in DI values exceeds the user-defined
Gap Trigger Levelor when DI spikes occur while the ADX is below a threshold (14). This helps visualize "slippage" or sudden shifts in participation. - Divergence Logic: The script identifies "dominance" conditions where the ADX significantly exceeds one of the directional indices while the other is suppressed. These calculations utilize moving averages (EMA) to ensure that only significant trend expansions are highlighted.
Settings
- ADX Length: Sets the lookback period for the ADX calculation (default is 14).
- DI Moving Average: Determines the smoothing length for the directional index signal lines.
- Gap Trigger Level: Sets the minimum change in DI required to trigger a "GAP" visual signal.
- Show Highlight Backgrounds: Toggles the display of background coloring for trend dominance and gap events.
- Show GAP Markers: Toggles the "GAP" text labels on the oscillator pane.
FAQ
How do I interpret the GAP markers?
GAP markers appear when there is a sudden spike in directional movement. This often precedes a new trend or represents a high-volatility event that may require confirmation from the ADX line itself.
What do the background colors represent?
Green backgrounds indicate a strong uptrend where DI+ is dominant. Red backgrounds indicate a strong downtrend where DI- is dominant. Gray/neutral highlights indicate a "Gap" condition where volatility has spiked.
