The Momentum Strategy indicator aims to identify high-probability trend continuation entries by combining price breakouts, relative strength, and moving average filters.

Usage

The Usage section focuses on identifying strong momentum assets that are outperforming the market. Traders can use this tool to automate or signal entries based on the following criteria:

  • Entry Signals: A buy signal is generated when the price hits a new high (default 63 days) while maintaining a high closing range and a bullish RSI (above 60). Additionally, the script requires the asset to be in an uptrend relative to a benchmark like the SPX or BTC.
  • Exit Management: The strategy employs a dynamic exit mechanism. It initially uses a shorter-term EMA (20-period) as a trailing stop. If the trade becomes significantly profitable (e.g., price increases by 20%), the stop shifts to a longer-term EMA (50-period) to allow for wider trend breathing room.
  • Relative Strength Exit: Regardless of price action, the strategy will exit if the asset's relative strength falls below its moving average, signaling that the asset is no longer outperforming its benchmark.

Details

The strategy is built on the concept of momentum investing—buying what is already going up and showing strength relative to the broader market. It calculates a "Relative Strength" (RS) line by dividing the current asset price by a selected benchmark (SPX for stocks or BTCUSD for crypto). By ensuring the RS is making new highs alongside price, the script filters out "weak" breakouts that might be lagging the general market movement.
