Moneyball EMA-MACD indicator
Feb 12, 2025

The Moneyball EMA-MACD indicator helps traders identify trend direction, momentum shifts, and high-probability trade setups by combining Exponential Moving Averages (EMA) with a customizable MACD oscillator. It uses specific color-coded logic to highlight short-term "base hit" opportunities and trend reversals.
Usage
The indicator is primarily used to visualize the relationship between price momentum and trend strength directly on the price bars. Traders can interpret the bar colors as follows:
- Green: Indicates the MACD is above the zero line and above its signal line, suggesting strong bullish momentum.
- Orange: Indicates the MACD is below the zero line but has crossed above the signal line, often representing an early bullish reversal or "getting on base."
- Fuchsia: Occurs when the 3 EMA crosses above the 9 EMA while price remains below the 20 and 50 EMAs and MACD is sub-zero. This highlights early aggressive bullish entries before a full trend shift.
- White (Default): Indicates the MACD is currently below its signal line.
- Red (Optional): Can be enabled to show when MACD is both below zero and below the signal line, representing strong bearish momentum.
The tool is effective for scalping on shorter timeframes to identify consistent small gains or can be adapted for swing trading on higher timeframes.
Details
The script constructs a custom MACD using configurable fast (default 9) and slow (default 50) lengths, paired with a 16-period signal smoothing. Unlike standard MACD indicators, this version allows users to choose between SMA, EMA, DEMA, or TEMA for both the oscillator and the signal line.
In addition to the oscillator logic, the script monitors four EMAs (3, 9, 20, and 50) to filter signals based on the broader price trend. The "Moneyball" concept refers to using data-driven indicators to find consistent, reliable entries (base hits) rather than solely chasing high-volatility "home runs."
