The VWAP BANDS indicator provides a comprehensive trend and volatility analysis tool by combining Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) with linear regression bands and forecasting capabilities.

Usage

The VWAP BANDS tool can be used to identify potential trend reversals, overbought/oversold conditions, and the general direction of the market. The bands expand and contract based on the standard deviation of the VWAP, creating a dynamic channel that contains price action.

  • Trend Identification: The central "Mean Band" represents the projected path of the VWAP. When the price is trading above this line, the sentiment is generally bullish; when below, it is bearish.
  • Support & Resistance: The upper and lower bands act as dynamic resistance and support levels. Touches or breaks of these bands often signal exhaustion or extreme volatility.
  • Trend/Forecast Mode: By toggling the "Trend" option, the indicator adjusts its projection lines to visualize the current slope and trajectory of the price movement based on the VWAP calculation.

Details

This script adapts linear regression logic—originally based on standard price inputs—to the Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP). By calculating the slope and intercept of the VWAP over a user-defined length, the script generates a linear forecast of the average price.

The forecasting method incorporated into the visual projection is inspired by Time Series Forecast techniques (referencing methods by Alex Grover). The bands are constructed by adding and subtracting a multiplier of the VWAP's standard deviation from the projected mean line, providing a statistically significant range for price movement.

Settings

  • VWAP Deviation: Determines the width of the bands by multiplying the standard deviation. A higher value creates wider bands.
  • Length: The lookback period used for the linear regression calculation and standard deviation.
  • Upper Deviation: Toggles the visibility of the upper resistance band.
  • Lower Deviation: Toggles the visibility of the lower support band.
  • Trend: Changes the calculation mode to focus on the current trend trajectory for the extended lines.

FAQ

How do I interpret the bands?

Prices near the upper band suggest an overextended market to the upside, while prices near the lower band suggest an overextended market to the downside. The center line serves as the mean value.

What length should I use?

While a default of 100 is provided, shorter timeframes (like 1-minute or 5-minute charts) often benefit from lengths of 50 or above, whereas daily charts may perform better with a shorter length like 20.
