Super Trend Line
Oct 23, 2019

The Super Trend Line indicator provides a trend-following overlay that helps traders identify the prevailing market direction and potential reversal points based on volatility.
Usage
The Usage section focuses on identifying trend shifts and maintaining positions during trending markets. When the price is above the Super Trend Line, the indicator colors the line green, suggesting a bullish environment. Conversely, when the price falls below the line, it turns red, signaling a bearish trend.
Traders often use this tool to:
- Trend Confirmation: Filter trades by only taking longs when the line is green and shorts when the line is red.
- Trailing Stop-Loss: Use the line itself as a dynamic stop-loss level that adjusts based on market volatility.
- Entry Signals: Look for "flips" where the line changes color as a signal for a potential change in market regime.
Details
The Super Trend Line is constructed using the Average True Range (ATR) and the median price (HL2). It calculates upper and lower bands by adding or subtracting a multiple of the ATR from the median price.
The logic includes a "ratchet" mechanism: the bullish line can only move up, and the bearish line can only move down until the price closes on the opposite side of the line. This ensures the indicator remains stable during minor fluctuations and only reverses when a significant price movement occurs.
Settings
- Super Trend (Factor): This multiplier determines how far the line is placed from the price. A higher value makes the indicator less sensitive to noise but slower to react to trend changes.
- ATR (Length): Sets the lookback period for the Average True Range calculation. This defines the volatility window used to calculate the bands.
