powerful moving average crossover
Apr 29, 2020

The powerful moving average crossover indicator utilizes two adapted Kalman optimum estimators to provide high-precision trend signals with minimal lag and reduced market noise.
Usage
The powerful moving average crossover is used to identify trend direction and potential reversal points through the interaction of two specialized filters. Traders can look for crossovers between the two lines to determine entry and exit points.
- Trend Identification: When the primary filter (Filter 01) is above the secondary filter (Filter 02), the background and primary line turn green, indicating a bullish trend. Conversely, when Filter 01 is below Filter 02, the background and primary line turn red, indicating a bearish trend.
- Crossover Signals: A bullish crossover occurs when Filter 01 crosses above Filter 02, suggesting a potential long entry. A bearish crossunder occurs when Filter 01 crosses below Filter 02, suggesting a potential short entry.
- Smoothing & Adaptivity: Because the underlying logic is based on an optimum tracking filter, the lines remain closer to price action than standard moving averages while filtering out "whiplash" or minor price fluctuations.
Details
This tool is a simplified adaptation of John Ehlers' application of Dr. Kalman’s optimum estimator for financial price action. The calculation involves measuring movement uncertainty and measurement uncertainty to derive an optimal smoothing factor ($\alpha$).
The core logic focuses on:
- Movement Uncertainty: Calculated based on price change and the user-defined Kalman Gain.
- Measurement Uncertainty: Derived from the price range (High - Low) to gauge volatility.
- $\lambda$ (Lambda): The ratio between these uncertainties, which determines how aggressively the filter reacts to new price data.
- Optimal Tracking: The resulting alpha value creates a filter that dynamically balances smoothness with responsiveness, aiming for the "optimum" estimation of the current price trend.
Settings
Main Settings
- Input Source: Determines the price data used for the calculation (e.g., HLC3, Close, HL2).
- Ratio of Uncertainties 01/02: Controls the adaptivity of the individual filters. Increasing this value makes the average more adaptive to price changes.
- Kalman Gain 01/02: Adjusts the amount of "error" allowed in the calculation. Lower values cause the moving average to track price action more closely and quickly.
- Show background color: Toggles the trend-based background highlighting on or off.
FAQ
How do I use the powerful moving average crossover signals?
The indicator provides visual crossovers and background color changes. Traders typically use a green background/crossover for bullish sentiment and a red background/crossunder for bearish sentiment.
What makes this different from a standard Moving Average?
Unlike Simple or Exponential Moving Averages, this tool uses Kalman filter logic to adapt its smoothing factor based on volatility and price velocity, resulting in less lag and fewer false signals during consolidation.
How can I access this indicator?
