The VWAP Stdev Bands indicator tool provides a comprehensive framework for intraday and swing trading by combining Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) with multiple standard deviation bands to identify key volatility and breakout levels.

Usage

The indicator can be used to gauge market volatility and identify potential trend exhaustion or breakout points. Intraday traders often use the second standard deviation band as a mean reversion boundary, while higher deviations serve as critical breakout zones.

A specific breakout strategy involves the previous day's VWAP data: if the current price crosses the fourth deviation of the previous day's VWAP, it indicates a high-momentum move. Users can also enable the "Pivotal VWAP" levels (PR3-PR5 and PS3-PS5) which act as significant resistance and support levels calculated from higher timeframes. Additionally, the inclusion of an hourly pivot and two moving averages (short and long) provides further context for trend direction.

Details

The script calculates two distinct types of VWAP:

  1. Current VWAP: Calculated based on the "Short Timeframe" (defaulting to Daily for intraday charts), providing real-time anchors for the current session.
  2. Pivotal VWAP: Calculated based on a "Pivotal Timeframe" (defaulting to Weekly), used to project support and resistance levels from the previous session's volatility.

The standard deviation calculation uses the difference between the mean of the squares and the square of the mean of the price, weighted by volume. This ensures that the bands accurately reflect the volume-weighted variance of the asset.

Settings

Visibility

  • Show first/second/third/fourth group of bands?: Toggles the display of the respective standard deviation bands around the current VWAP.
  • Show resistance/support breakouts (3, 4, 5): Displays pivotal horizontal levels derived from the previous session's VWAP and standard deviations.
  • Show Hourly Pivot?: Toggles the visibility of the previous hour's HLC3 average and the SMA lines.

Parameters

  • Short SMA Length: Sets the period for the short-term simple moving average.
  • Long SMA Length: Sets the period for the long-term simple moving average.
  • Short Timeframe: Defines the anchor period for VWAP on intraday charts.
  • Long Timeframe: Defines the anchor period for VWAP on non-intraday charts.
  • Pivotal Timeframe: Sets the timeframe used to calculate the static support and resistance breakout levels.

FAQ

How do I access VWAP Stdev Bands?

You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.

What is the significance of the 4th deviation?

In this script, the 4th deviation of the previous session's VWAP is treated as a major breakout level. Prices crossing or bouncing off this level often indicate rapid movement and high-conviction trading opportunities.

Can this indicator be used on daily charts?

Yes, the script includes a "Long Timeframe" setting (defaulting to 12 months) that allows the VWAP logic to function on daily or higher timeframes, though it is primarily optimized for intraday volatility analysis.
