EMA 50/8 Cross With Buy/Sell Signals
Jan 31, 2025

The EMA 50/8 Cross With Buy/Sell Signals indicator identifies trend reversals and entry points by tracking the relationship between short-term and long-term exponential moving averages.
Usage
The indicator is primarily used to identify trend shifts through EMA crossovers. A Buy signal is generated when the 8-period EMA crosses above the 50-period EMA, while a Sell signal occurs when the 8-period EMA crosses below the 50-period EMA.
Users can observe labels plotted on the chart to identify these moments:
- Buy Labels: Green labels appearing below the price action.
- Sell Labels: Red labels appearing above the price action.
To prevent repetitive signals in ranging markets, the tool is designed to only trigger a new signal if the previous signal was of the opposite type. Traders can use the volatility-adjusted label placement to keep the chart clean, ensuring signals remain visible even during high-volatility moves.
Details
The script utilizes two Exponential Moving Averages (EMA) with default lengths of 8 and 50. To enhance visibility and adaptability, signal positions are calculated using the Average True Range (ATR).
The placement logic follows these formulas:
- Buy Signal Position: Low - (Signal Distance * ATR)
- Sell Signal Position: High + (Signal Distance * ATR)
This ensures that labels are dynamically spaced based on current market volatility. Additionally, the script includes "Buffer Percentage" inputs which allow users to require the EMA cross to exceed a specific percentage threshold of the long EMA before a signal is triggered, helping to filter out minor "noise" or false crossovers.
Settings
Main Settings
- Signal Distance from Candles: Controls how far above or below the price the Buy/Sell labels are plotted, measured in ATR units.
- Exact Value Location offset: Adjusts the vertical offset of the cross icon displayed at the signal candle.
- ATR Length: The lookback period used for the Average True Range calculation.
- Short EMA Length: The period for the fast EMA (default is 8).
- Long EMA Length: The period for the slow EMA (default is 50).
Buffer Settings
- Buy Signal Buffer Percentage: The percentage distance the short EMA must be above the long EMA to trigger a buy.
- Sell Signal Buffer Percentage: The percentage distance the short EMA must be below the long EMA to trigger a sell.
FAQ
How do I access EMA 50/8 Cross With Buy/Sell Signals?
You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
Can I change the EMA periods?
Yes, you can modify both the short and long EMA lengths within the settings menu to fit different timeframes or strategies.
What do the buffer percentages do?
The buffer percentages act as a filter. By increasing the buffer, you require a stronger crossover before a signal is confirmed, which can help reduce false signals during sideways consolidation.
