RSI + Fibonacci Higher Highs, Lower Lows StopLoss Finder / Contrarian Trade
Sep 28, 2023

The RSI + Fibonacci Higher Highs, Lower Lows StopLoss Finder / Contrarian Trade indicator combines lookback-based price extremes with momentum analysis to identify potential reversal points and stop-loss placements. By smoothing historical highest highs and lowest lows with EMA calculations and integrating a smoothed RSI, the tool helps traders spot when price is overextended or approaching significant structural levels across any timeframe.
Usage
The tool is designed for two primary objectives: identifying stop-loss zones and finding contrarian entry points.
- Stop-Loss Placement: The red and green shaded zones represent dynamic price boundaries based on historical highs and lows. Traders can use the outer edges of these bands to set stop-losses that account for recent market volatility.
- Contrarian Trading: When the RSI (smoothed by an EMA) enters overbought or oversold territories, the bar colors change (Red for bearish, Green for bullish). A contrarian trader looks for these signals when price is testing the Fibonacci-based higher high or lower low bands.
- Trend Shifts: The interaction between the two EMA-smoothed lookback lines (Highest/Lowest EMA 1 and 2) creates a shaded cloud. A change in the cloud color indicates a shift in how current price extremes relate to historical offsets, signaling potential momentum changes.
Details
The indicator operates by calculating the highest high and lowest low over a user-defined period (defaulting to Fibonacci numbers like 144). These values are then smoothed using an Exponential Moving Average (EMA) to reduce noise.
A unique "Slide Length" parameter is applied to a second set of lookback calculations, creating an offset effect that allows for the comparison of current extremes against historical ones. Simultaneously, the tool processes price through a 5-period EMA before calculating the RSI, providing a "Smoothed RSI" that is less reactive to minor price flickers and more focused on sustainable momentum shifts.
Settings
- Lookback Bars / Lookback Bars 2: Determines the period used to find the highest high and lowest low.
- EMA Length 1 / EMA Length 2: The length of the smoothing applied to the identified high/low levels.
- Slide Length: An offset value used to shift the second set of lookback calculations for comparison.
- Close EMA Length: The period for smoothing price before it is passed to the RSI calculation.
- RSI Length: The lookback period for the Relative Strength Index.
- Overbought / Oversold Level: Thresholds for the RSI that trigger bar color changes and alerts.
FAQ
How do I interpret the bar colors? Bars turn green when the smoothed RSI drops below the oversold level, suggesting a potential bullish reversal. Bars turn red when the RSI rises above the overbought level, suggesting a potential bearish reversal.
What timeframe works best for this indicator? The indicator is multi-timeframe compatible and can be used for scalping (15m), day trading (1h), or swing trading (4h/Daily) by adjusting the lookback bars to appropriate Fibonacci numbers.
