RSI Moving Average Crossovers
Dec 14, 2021

The RSI Moving Average Crossovers indicator provides a comprehensive momentum and trend analysis framework by combining the Relative Strength Index (RSI) with multiple moving average filters to identify market impulses and corrections.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify market sentiment and potential entry or exit points. The indicator functions by analyzing the relationship between the RSI and its own moving average, while simultaneously evaluating the broader price trend through a dual moving average crossover system.
- Trend Identification: A "Bullish" trend is identified when the Fast MA is above the Slow MA and the current price closes above the Slow MA. Conversely, a "Bearish" trend occurs when the Fast MA is below the Slow MA and the price closes below the Slow MA. If these conditions are not met, the trend is labeled "Uncertain."
- Impulse vs. Correction: When a trend is established, the indicator determines the market "Status." An "Impulse" is signaled when the RSI aligns with the trend (e.g., RSI above RSI MA in a bullish trend). A "Correction" is signaled when the RSI moves against the prevailing trend (e.g., RSI below RSI MA in a bullish trend).
- Crossover Signals: The tool plots visual markers for two types of crossovers:
- Triangles indicate crossovers between the RSI and the RSI Moving Average.
- "X" shapes indicate crossovers between the Fast and Slow price Moving Averages.
- Visual Screener: A dashboard in the bottom-left corner provides real-time data on the current RSI value, the RSI MA value, the trend direction, and the current movement status (Impulse/Correction).
Details
The script utilizes a modular approach to technical analysis by applying smoothing techniques directly to momentum oscillators. By using a moving average on the RSI, the indicator filters out "noise" and provides a clearer signal for momentum shifts.
The background coloring within the RSI levels (30-70) dynamically changes based on the detected trend and status. Bright colors indicate strong impulse moves, while desaturated or transparent colors indicate corrections or uncertain phases. This allows for a quick visual assessment of whether a current move is a primary trend extension or a secondary retracement.
Settings

RSI
- RSI source: Determines the price input for the RSI calculation.
- RSI Length: Sets the lookback period for the RSI oscillator.
- Moving Average Length: Sets the period for the moving average applied to the RSI line.
- RSI MA Type: Selects the calculation method for the RSI’s moving average.
- Overbought level: Defines the upper threshold (default 70).
- Oversold level: Defines the lower threshold (default 30).
Options
- Plot RSI/MA crossovers: Toggles the visibility of triangle markers for RSI/MA crosses.
- Plot Trend MA crossovers: Toggles the visibility of "X" markers for price MA crosses.
- Show screener: Enables or disables the data table in the bottom-left corner.
FAQ
How do I interpret the "Uncertain" trend status? The status becomes "Uncertain" when the price and moving averages are not in alignment (e.g., the Fast MA is above the Slow MA, but the price has closed below the Slow MA). This often suggests a range-bound market or a potential trend reversal.
What is the difference between an "Impulse" and a "Correction" in this tool? An Impulse move occurs when the RSI momentum is moving in the same direction as the price trend MAs. A Correction occurs when the price trend remains intact, but the RSI crosses its average in the opposite direction, suggesting a temporary pullback.
