The Breakout Pattern Setup indicator automatically identifies converging price channels such as wedges, triangles, and pennants to detect high-probability breakout opportunities. By utilizing a boundary-fit algorithm and a 5-factor strength scoring engine, it filters market noise and provides automated targets based on measured moves.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify volatility squeezes and manage resulting trades. The tool visualizes patterns in real-time and provides clear entry, stop-loss, and take-profit levels once a breakout is confirmed.

  • Pattern Identification: When a valid converging channel is detected, yellow trendlines appear on the chart. The dashboard will show "Active" along with a directional probability score ("Bull Prob").
  • Breakout Execution: A signal is triggered when a candle closes outside the channel boundaries. The indicator then calculates a strength score (Strong, Medium, or Weak) based on volume, momentum, and price action.
  • Trade Management: Upon breakout, the tool plots three Take Profit (TP) levels and one Stop Loss (SL).
    • TP1: Initial target; once hit, the SL automatically trails to the entry price (breakeven).
    • TP3: The final target based on the full "measured move" (the maximum width of the channel).
  • Display Modes: Users can choose "All" to see every historical pattern or "Last Only" for a cleaner interface that only displays the current setup.

Details

The indicator follows a specific sequential pipeline to ensure objective analysis:

  1. Boundary-Fit Algorithm: Instead of simple regression, the script performs an exhaustive search over the last 15 pivots per side. It identifies the trendline pair that maximizes "touches" while ensuring no pivot exceeds a volatility-adjusted deviation threshold ($ATR$-normalized).
  2. Validation Logic: A channel must meet five criteria to be active: narrowing width (convergence), sufficient width (not too thin), price residing inside the lines, no line inversion, and optional volume contraction (declining participation during the squeeze).
  3. 5-Factor Scoring: Breakouts are scored (0–100) based on Penetration Depth, Body Ratio (candle conviction), Body Commitment (midpoint position), Volume Confirmation (spike relative to SMA), and Momentum (RSI alignment).
  4. Directional Probability: While inside the channel, the script estimates the likely breakout direction by weighting the channel slope (35%), RSI bias (35%), and price position relative to the boundaries (30%).

Settings

Main Settings

  • Pivot Detection Length: The number of bars required on each side to confirm a swing high or low.
  • Min Touches per Boundary: Minimum number of pivot points required to validate a trendline.
  • Max Channel Width (bars): The maximum historical lookback for finding a pattern.
  • Min Convergence Rate: The minimum percentage the channel must narrow to be considered a valid squeeze.

Filters

  • Volume Spike Mult: The multiplier for volume on the breakout bar relative to its 20-period average.
  • Volume Contraction Filter: Requires average volume inside the channel to be lower than the volume preceding the channel.
  • Momentum Confirmation: Requires RSI to be in alignment with the breakout direction (e.g., > 50 for bullish).

Risk Management & Visuals

  • SL Padding (ATR): Adds an extra volatility buffer beyond the opposite channel boundary for the stop loss.
  • Pattern History: Toggles between showing all historical detections or only the most recent.
  • Label Offset: Adjusts the horizontal placement of price level labels to the right of the current bar.

FAQ

How is the Take Profit calculated? The targets are based on the "measured move" principle, where the maximum vertical width of the channel is projected from the breakout point. TP1 is at 33%, TP2 at 67%, and TP3 at 100% of that distance.

Does the indicator repaint its signals? No. All breakout signals are calculated only once a bar is confirmed (closed). The channel detection is based on confirmed pivots, which require a fixed lookback period to validate.
