The MTF MACD 4C indicator provides a multi-timeframe approach to the classic Moving Average Convergence Divergence oscillator, using a four-color histogram to better visualize momentum strength and direction across different intervals.

Usage

The Usage section focuses on interpreting the trend and momentum shifts provided by the multi-timeframe logic. Traders can use this tool to identify trend direction on higher timeframes while remaining on their current chart.

  • Momentum Identification: The four-color histogram differentiates between rising and falling momentum relative to the zero line.
    • Bright Green: MACD is above 0 and rising (Strong Bullish).
    • Dark Green: MACD is above 0 and falling (Weakening Bullish).
    • Bright Red: MACD is below 0 and falling (Strong Bearish).
    • Dark Red: MACD is below 0 and rising (Weakening Bearish).
  • Zero-Cross Signals: Labels appear on the chart when the MACD line crosses the zero level, signaling a potential shift in the long-term trend for the selected interval.
  • Signal Line: The signal line also changes color based on its own directional slope, providing an additional layer of confirmation for entry or exit points.

Details

This script calculates the MACD based on user-defined intervals using request.security. It offers a unique "Moving average period multiplier" mode which scales the fast and slow moving average lengths instead of requesting a static timeframe. This allows for a more dynamic "pseudo-MTF" experience where the oscillator reflects longer-period cycles without the typical "stepping" artifacts associated with standard multi-timeframe data fetching.

Settings

  • Fast moving average: Sets the period for the shorter EMA (default 12).
  • Slow moving average: Sets the period for the longer EMA (default 26).
  • Choose method of Interval selection:
    • Predefined Interval: Uses a standard timeframe picker (e.g., Daily, 4h).
    • Specific Interval: Allows for manual string input for the timeframe.
    • Moving average period multiplier: Multiplies the MA periods by a factor to simulate higher timeframe behavior on the current chart.
  • Moving average period multiplier: The value used to scale the MA lengths when that mode is selected.
  • Predefined Interval: The timeframe used when the "Predefined" mode is active.
  • Specific Interval: The timeframe used when the "Specific" mode is active.

FAQ

How do I interpret the colors?

The colors represent the relationship between the current MACD value and its previous value. Bright colors indicate momentum moving further away from the zero line (strengthening), while dark colors indicate momentum returning toward the zero line (weakening).

What is the "Moving average period multiplier"?

Instead of fetching data from a different timeframe, this mode simply increases the lengths of the moving averages used in the calculation. This provides a smoother look that mimics higher timeframe momentum without the gaps found in traditional MTF indicators.
