MACD + Colors + Signals
Jun 8, 2018

The MACD + Colors + Signals indicator provides a comprehensive visual enhancement of the classic MACD, integrating directional color coding and crossover signals to streamline trend identification.
Usage
The tool is used to identify momentum shifts and trend directions. Users can monitor the relationship between the MACD line, the Signal line, and the Histogram.
- Crossovers: Bullish and bearish crossovers between the MACD and Signal lines are marked with up and down triangles, respectively, providing immediate entry or exit cues.
- Signal Line Coloring: The Signal line changes color based on its slope (rising or falling), allowing traders to gauge the strength of the current momentum.
- Histogram Interpretation: The histogram displays the difference between the MACD and Signal lines. It utilizes a multi-color scheme to represent whether momentum is increasing or decreasing relative to the zero line.
Details
The indicator calculates the difference between a Fast EMA and a Slow EMA to create the MACD line. A Signal line (EMA of the MACD) is then derived to identify potential turning points.
A unique feature of this implementation is the "Color Lookback" setting. When active, it evaluates the rising or falling state of the Signal line and Histogram over a specified number of bars. This directional data is then translated into color states:
- Green: Rising momentum/direction.
- Red: Falling momentum/direction.
- Yellow: Transitional states where the direction is not clearly rising or falling based on the lookback.
If the lookback is set to 0, the indicator reverts to a standard dual-color mode (Positive/Negative).
Settings
MACD Parameters
- Fast Length: The period for the shorter Exponential Moving Average (default 12).
- Slow Length: The period for the longer Exponential Moving Average (default 26).
- Signal Length: The period for the EMA of the MACD line (default 9).
Visuals
- Color Lookback: Determines the number of bars used to calculate if the Signal and Histogram are rising or falling. Setting this to 0 disables directional coloring in favor of standard threshold-based coloring.
FAQ
How do I interpret the triangle signals?
The up triangles represent a bullish crossover where the MACD line crosses above the Signal line, while down triangles represent a bearish crossunder where the MACD line falls below the Signal line.
What does the yellow color indicate?
Yellow typically indicates a loss of momentum or a non-trending state relative to the "Color Lookback" period, signaling that the line is neither consistently rising nor falling.
