The RSI Pull-Back indicator identifies potential trend reversal or continuation opportunities by detecting when the Relative Strength Index (RSI) returns to test specific extreme barriers after exiting oversold or overbought zones.

Usage

The RSI Pull-Back tool provides visual signals on the chart to highlight specific momentum exhaustion and retest patterns.

  • Bullish Signal: Occurs when the RSI rises above the oversold barrier, peaks below a secondary threshold, and then pulls back to test the barrier level without falling below it. This suggests a successful retest of support within the momentum oscillator.
  • Bearish Signal: Occurs when the RSI falls below the overbought barrier, bottoms above a secondary threshold, and then pulls back to test the barrier level without rising above it. This suggests a successful retest of resistance within the momentum oscillator.

Traders often use these signals to find high-probability entry points during market corrections.

Details

A pull-back occurs when price or an indicator value breaks a significant level and returns to test it before continuing in the prevailing direction. In this implementation, the logic focuses on the RSI barriers (typically 30/70 or 20/80).

The script tracks a specific sequence:

  1. The RSI crosses out of an extreme zone (e.g., crossing above 30).
  2. The RSI remains below a defined "threshold" (e.g., 40), ensuring the move isn't yet an exhaustive trend.
  3. The RSI turns back toward the original barrier.
  4. A signal is triggered when the RSI touches or approaches the barrier, confirming the pull-back pattern.

Settings

  • Lookback: Sets the period used for the RSI calculation (default is 14).
  • Lower Barrier: The oversold level used for the pull-back test (e.g., 30).
  • Lower Threshold: The maximum level the RSI can reach during a bullish recovery before the pull-back must occur.
  • Upper Barrier: The overbought level used for the pull-back test (e.g., 70).
  • Upper Threshold: The minimum level the RSI can reach during a bearish recovery before the pull-back must occur.

FAQ

How do I use the signals provided by the indicator?

Signals are displayed as triangles on the chart. A green upward triangle represents a bullish pull-back, while a red downward triangle represents a bearish pull-back.

Can I change the sensitivity of the pull-backs?

Yes, by adjusting the Barrier and Threshold settings. A tighter gap between the barrier and the threshold will result in fewer, more specific signals.
