The Stochastic Momentum Index indicator measures where the current close price is relative to the midpoint of the recent high/low range, providing a smoothed oscillator that helps traders identify trend direction and potential market reversals.

Usage

The Stochastic Momentum Index (SMI) can be used to identify momentum shifts and trend exhaustion. Unlike the traditional Stochastic oscillator, which uses the distance from the low within a range, the SMI calculates the distance of the close from the center of the range, resulting in an oscillator that fluctuates between -100 and +100.

Traders can utilize the SMI in several ways:

  • Overbought/Oversold Conditions: Values above the Overbought Level (default +40) or below the Oversold Level (default -40) suggest extreme market conditions where a reversal may occur.
  • Signal Line Crossovers: Bullish signals occur when the SMI crosses above its Signal Line, while bearish signals occur when it crosses below.
  • Zero Line Crossovers: Crossing the zero line indicates a shift in the medium-term trend direction.
  • Histogram Analysis: The optional histogram helps visualize the distance between the SMI and the Signal Line, indicating increasing or decreasing momentum.

Details

Originally developed by William Blau, the SMI aims to provide a less erratic version of the standard Stochastic oscillator. It achieves this by applying double exponential moving average (EMA) smoothing to both the numerator (the distance from the midpoint) and the denominator (the total range). This dual smoothing process reduces noise and provides a clearer picture of market momentum.

Settings

  • Stochastic Lookback: The number of bars used to determine the high/low range.
  • 1st Smoothing Length: The length of the first EMA smoothing applied to the SMI calculation.
  • 2nd Smoothing Length: The length of the second EMA smoothing applied.
  • Signal Length: The EMA period used to calculate the Signal Line from the SMI.
  • Overbought Level: The threshold for identifying overbought market conditions.
  • Oversold Level: The threshold for identifying oversold market conditions.
  • Max/Min Level: The extreme boundaries used for visual reference and filling.
  • Source: The price input used for the calculation (default is Close).
  • Show Histogram?: Toggles the visibility of the momentum histogram.
  • Highlight Overbought/Oversold Breakouts?: Colors the background or ribbons when price enters extreme zones.
  • Highlight SMI/Signal Crossovers?: Displays visual markers when the SMI and Signal Line cross.
  • Highlight Zero Line Crossovers?: Colors the background based on SMI's position relative to zero.
  • Apply Ribbon Filling?: Enables a colored cloud between the SMI and Signal Line.

FAQ

How do I interpret the SMI crossing the zero line?

When the SMI crosses above zero, it indicates that the current price is trading above the midpoint of the recent range, signaling bullish momentum. Conversely, a cross below zero suggests bearish momentum.

What is the difference between SMI and regular Stochastics?

The standard Stochastic oscillator measures the current price relative to the low of the range, while the SMI measures the price relative to the midpoint of the range. This makes the SMI more responsive to the center of price action and generally smoother due to the double EMA application.
