The CM_ADX_V1 indicator provides a specialized visualization of the Average Directional Index (ADX) to help traders quantify trend strength and identify periods of market expansion or consolidation. By utilizing a color-coded column system and fixed threshold levels, this tool allows for rapid assessment of whether a market is trending or ranging.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used, examples should be provided in this section. The CM_ADX_V1 is primarily used to filter out low-volatility environments and confirm the presence of a strong trend. Traders typically look for the ADX to rise above specific levels to validate momentum.

  • Trend Identification: When the ADX columns turn green (above 20) or orange (above 40), it indicates a strong or very strong trend is present.
  • Consolidation Filtering: When the ADX is gray (below 10) or blue (between 10 and 20), the market is often considered to be in a range or weak trend, suggesting that trend-following strategies may be less effective.
  • System Integration: This indicator is designed to be used alongside the CM_DI_Plus_Minus_V1 and CM_Gann_Swing_Hi_Lo indicators. While the ADX measures trend strength, the DI+/- indicators provide the trend direction.

Details

The script calculates the Average Directional Index using the standard Wilder’s Smoothing method (RMA). It first determines the Directional Movement (DM) by comparing the current high/low to the previous high/low. These values are normalized by the True Range (TR) to create the Plus Directional Indicator (+DI) and Minus Directional Indicator (-DI).

The ADX itself is the smoothed moving average of the Directional Index (DX), which is the absolute difference between +DI and -DI divided by their sum. A unique aspect of this script is the visual representation: instead of a single line, it uses color-coded columns to categorize trend intensity based on four distinct levels (0, 10, 20, and 40).

Settings

  • DI Length: Sets the lookback period for the calculation of the Plus and Minus Directional Indicators and the True Range.
  • ADX Smoothing: Determines the smoothing period applied to the DX to calculate the final ADX value. Higher values result in a slower, more filtered indicator.

FAQ

How do I interpret the colors on the ADX columns? Gray indicates a very weak trend (below 10), blue indicates a developing trend (10-20), green indicates a confirmed trend (20-40), and orange indicates an extremely strong trend (above 40).

Does this indicator show trend direction? No, the ADX only measures the strength of a trend. To determine if the trend is bullish or bearish, it should be paired with Directional Movement indicators (+DI/-DI).
