The RedK Momentum Bars (RedK Mo_Bars) indicator visualizes relative momentum through a three-moving-average system to identify trend direction, convergence/divergence, and potential market reversals.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to interpret momentum changes and trend transitions. The indicator functions as a centered, unrestricted oscillator, similar to the MACD, but utilizes a unique calculation involving three distinct components: a fast MA, a signal (slow) MA, and a filter (baseline) MA.

  • Trend Bias: The zero line acts as the primary trend filter. When momentum bars are above zero, the environment is considered bullish; when below zero, the environment is bearish.
  • Momentum Strength: The length of each bar represents the distance between the fast price-tracking line and the signal line. Increasing bar size indicates accelerating relative momentum, while shrinking bars suggest momentum is fading.
  • Color Logic: Bars are color-coded to reflect directional shifts. Green bars indicate bullish momentum where the fast MA is above the signal MA and rising. Red bars indicate bearish momentum where the fast MA is below the signal MA and falling. Neutral (white/grey) bars often appear when momentum direction changes, signaling potential mean reversion or trend exhaustion.
  • Chop Detection: Areas where bars remain near the zero line or frequently switch colors highlight market consolidation or "chop," warning traders of low-conviction environments.

Details

The script is constructed using three moving averages to isolate and smooth price action:

  1. Fast Tracking Line: A short-period MA (defaulting to the RSS MA or "Lazy Line") that tracks price closely.
  2. Signal Line: A slightly slower MA that typically uses the open price as a source. This helps identify when closing prices begin to move faster than opening prices. A WMA smoothing delay is applied to this line to magnify the displacement between it and the fast line.
  3. Filter Line: A much slower MA (typically 5 to 6 times the length of the fast line) that serves as the baseline for the entire oscillator.

The indicator uses the RSS MA (Relative Smoothing Selection) by default, as it provides a smoother response to price changes compared to standard MAs, effectively reducing "whipsaws" during minor price fluctuations. The output is plotted as a series of candles where the "Open" is the signal value and the "Close" is the fast MA value, both calculated relative to the filter baseline.

Settings

Main Settings

  • Fast MA Source/Length/Type: Defines the price input, period, and calculation method (SMA, EMA, WMA, HMA, or RSS_WMA) for the main price-tracking line.
  • Slow MA Source/Length/Type: Defines the input and period for the signal line. Using "Open" for the source is often preferred for identifying momentum acceleration.
  • Delay: Adds WMA-based smoothing to the slow MA to increase the relative displacement between the fast and signal lines.
  • Filter MA Length/Type: Sets the period and type for the baseline filter. This determines the overall "Zero" reference for the oscillator.

FAQ

How do I interpret the neutral colored bars? Neutral bars appear when there is a divergence between the position of the fast MA relative to the signal line and its immediate direction. This often occurs during trend transitions or periods of profit-taking.

Can I change the moving average types used in the calculation? Yes, the settings menu allows you to choose between SMA, EMA, WMA, HMA, and the proprietary RSS_WMA (Lazy Line) for the Fast, Slow, and Filter components.
