GrayZone Sniper — Breakout Validation System
Aug 17, 2025

The GrayZone Sniper indicator is a breakout validation tool designed to identify consolidation phases and confirm high-probability price movements by aligning momentum and volatility filters. It aims to eliminate market noise by detecting "gray zones" and triggering signals only when price expansion is supported by directional strength.
Usage
The indicator visualizes market states through a combination of color-coded backgrounds and on-chart gray boxes. When the market is sideways, a gray box defines the consolidation range. A trade signal is generated when price breaks beyond these boundaries under specific conditions:
- Long Trigger (L): Occurs when the price closes above the gray zone while momentum is bullish and range expansion is confirmed.
- Short Trigger (S): Occurs when the price closes below the gray zone while momentum is bearish and range expansion is confirmed.
- Exit Signals (LS/SS): The tool provides "Long Stop" and "Short Stop" hints when expansion fades and the T3 trendline rotates against the current position, helping traders manage exits before reversals.
Traders can use the persistent gray levels as potential retest zones or targets. The "fire on bar close" setting is recommended to avoid intrabar fakeouts.
Details
The script relies on the synergy between two primary filters:
- Mean Deviation (MD): This acts as a volatility regime filter. By comparing the current absolute deviation of the Typical Price from its SMA against a historical baseline, the tool determines if the market is actually expanding or just "wiggling" within normal noise levels.
- TFRSI: A smoothed and normalized momentum oscillator that tracks directional strength relative to a 50 baseline. It filters out RSI "twitchiness" to provide a steadier view of trend direction.
A signal is only validated if MD confirms expansion and TFRSI confirms direction, reducing the likelihood of entering "thin" breakouts that lack follow-through.
Settings
Core: TFRSI & MD
- TFRSI Length: Sets the calculation period for the momentum component.
- TFRSI Smoothing: Applies an SMA to the TFRSI for cleaner signal transitions.
- Mean Deviation Period: The lookback period for the volatility expansion baseline.
- Use classical MD: Toggles between a standard
ta.devcalculation and a customized MD vs. SMA approach. - TFRSI Deadzone: Defines a neutral buffer around the 50 level to increase the strictness of momentum confirmation.
Triggers & Logic
- Trigger only on confirmed bars: If enabled, signals only appear once the candle has closed.
- Reset gray-zone bounds after trigger: Clears the consolidation box once a valid breakout occurs.
- Auto-deactivate on neutral: Disarms the signal logic if the market returns to a neutral state.
Gray-Zone Boxes & Levels
- Show gray boxes: Enables visual plotting of consolidation ranges.
- Persist gray levels: Extends the high and low of the last gray zone to the right for future reference.
FAQ
How do I use the gray boxes for trading?
The gray boxes represent price "coiling." You should wait for the box to finish forming and only act when a validated 'L' or 'S' signal appears, indicating the market has successfully broken out of that range.
What causes a "Stop" (LS/SS) signal?
A stop signal is triggered when the volatility expansion (MD) weakens and the T3 trendline begins moving in the opposite direction of your trade.
How can I access GrayZone Sniper?
You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
