The Momentum Trader indicator is a trend-following tool that combines the Chande Momentum Oscillator (CMO) and the Percentage Price Oscillator (PPO) to identify high-probability momentum reversals and trend exhaustion points. By integrating these two distinct momentum perspectives, the script provides a comprehensive view of trend strength and potential entry/exit signals.

Usage

The Momentum Trader is primarily used to identify long entry opportunities following a period of oversold momentum and to detect exit points when a trend reaches exhaustion.

  • Long Entry: A signal is generated when the Chande Momentum crosses above zero while it is in a rising state, provided it was recently below the defined lower bound. This indicates a sharp recovery from an oversold condition.
  • Long Exit: An exit is triggered when the PPO shows signs of weakening (negative slope and value below 5%) shortly after reaching an overbought upper bound, while the Chande Momentum remains at elevated levels. This helps capture profits before a trend reverses.
  • Trend Strength: The teal and pink histograms provide immediate visual feedback on the current momentum. Values above zero suggest a bullish bias, while values below zero indicate bearish control.

Details

The script utilizes two core momentum concepts:

  1. Chande Momentum Oscillator (CMO): Unlike other oscillators, the CMO uses data in both the numerator and denominator, providing a more sensitive measurement of trend strength and direct tracking of price-momentum divergence.
  2. Percentage Price Oscillator (PPO): Functioning similarly to the MACD, the PPO measures the percentage difference between two moving averages. Using percentages instead of absolute values makes it easier to compare momentum across different assets and price levels.

The indicator includes logic to filter signals based on the time elapsed since specific boundary crosses, ensuring that entries and exits are timed to specific momentum cycles rather than isolated price ticks.

Settings

  • Chande Momentum Length: Sets the lookback period for the CMO calculation.
  • PPO Slow/Fast/Signal Length: Adjusts the EMA periods used to calculate the Percentage Price Oscillator and its signal line.
  • Source CM/PPO: Determines the price data (e.g., Close, HL2) used for calculations.
  • Upper/Lower Bound: Defines the threshold levels for overbought and oversold conditions used in the signal logic.
  • Plotting Toggles: Allows users to show or hide the CMO, PPO, Upper/Lower bounds, and background signals for a cleaner chart.

FAQ

How do I interpret the background colors?

Green background highlights represent valid "Enter Long" signals, while red background highlights represent "Exit Long" signals based on the combined oscillator logic.

Can I use this for shorting?

The current version is specifically optimized with logic for long entries and exits; however, the oscillator values (CMO and PPO) can still be manually interpreted to gauge bearish momentum.
