ICT IOF
Jun 8, 2016

The ICT IOF indicator is a trend-following tool designed to define Institutional Order Flow (IOF) based on Inner Circle Trader concepts to help traders identify the prevailing market direction. By utilizing a dual exponential moving average crossover system, it provides clear visual cues on the chart background to highlight bullish and bearish regimes.
Usage
The script is primarily used to identify the current state of institutional order flow. When the shorter-term moving average is above the longer-term moving average, the order flow is considered bullish, and the chart background is colored green. Conversely, when the shorter-term moving average is below the longer-term moving average, the order flow is considered bearish, and the chart background is colored red.
Traders can use these color changes as confirmation for trend-following entries or as a filter to avoid trading against the dominant institutional momentum.
Details
The indicator calculates two specific Exponential Moving Averages (EMAs):
- Fast EMA: A 9-period EMA representing short-term price momentum.
- Slow EMA: An 18-period EMA representing a slightly longer-term trend baseline.
The "Institutional Order Flow" is determined by the relationship between these two values. The script also includes built-in alert functionality that triggers when a crossover occurs, signaling a potential shift in order flow at the close of a bar.
Settings
- Bulllish Color: Defines the color used for the background when the 9 EMA is above the 18 EMA (default is green).
- Bearish Color: Defines the color used for the background when the 9 EMA is below the 18 EMA (default is red).
FAQ
How do I use the ICT IOF for entries?
While the tool identifies the trend direction, many traders use it as a trend filter, only looking for long setups when the background is green and short setups when the background is red.
What timeframes work best for this script?
As an Institutional Order Flow tool, it can be applied to any timeframe; however, it is commonly used on higher timeframes (H1, H4, Daily) to identify the "daily bias" or on lower timeframes for intraday trend alignment.
