The VW-MACD indicator incorporates volume into the traditional Moving Average Convergence Divergence framework to provide a more comprehensive view of market momentum and trend strength. By substituting standard moving averages with Volume-Weighted Moving Averages (VWMA), this tool emphasizes price action occurring on higher volume, potentially offering earlier and more reliable trend signals.

Usage

The VW-MACD can be used similarly to the standard MACD but with a focus on volume-validated price movements. Traders typically look for the following:

  • Signal Line Crossovers: A bullish signal is generated when the VW-MACD line crosses above the signal line, while a bearish signal occurs when it crosses below.
  • Zero Line Crossovers: When the VW-MACD crosses above zero, it indicates that the short-term volume-weighted average is higher than the long-term average, suggesting an uptrend. Conversely, a cross below zero suggests a downtrend.
  • Histogram Analysis: The histogram represents the distance between the VW-MACD and the signal line. Increasing bars indicate strengthening momentum, while decreasing bars suggest momentum is fading.
  • Divergences: Identifying discrepancies between price action and the VW-MACD can highlight potential trend reversals where price is moving without significant volume support.

Details

Developed by Buff Pelz Dormeier in 2000, the VW-MACD replaces the Exponential Moving Averages (EMA) used in the standard MACD with Volume-Weighted Moving Averages (VWMA). The core calculation involves subtracting a long-term VWMA from a short-term VWMA. A standard Signal Line, typically an EMA of the VW-MACD value, is then applied to generate trigger points. This implementation allows the indicator to "weight" price trends by the amount of trading activity, adhering to the principle that volume should confirm price trends.

Settings

  • Fast Length: Sets the period for the short-term Volume-Weighted Moving Average.
  • Slow Length: Sets the period for the long-term Volume-Weighted Moving Average.
  • Signal Length: Determines the period for the Exponential Moving Average used as the signal line.
  • Show Histogram?: Toggles the visibility of the momentum histogram.
  • Highlight VW-MACD/Signal Crossovers?: When enabled, identifies crossovers between the VW-MACD and signal lines with visual markers on the chart.
  • Highlight Zero Line Crossovers?: Enables background highlighting when the VW-MACD crosses the zero threshold.
  • Apply Ribbon Filling?: Fills the space between the VW-MACD and signal line to better visualize the trend direction and spread.

FAQ

How do I interpret the VW-MACD compared to the standard MACD?

The VW-MACD will react faster to price movements occurring on high volume and slower to movements on low volume. This helps filter out "weak" price action that lacks market conviction.

What are the default periods for this indicator?

The default settings are 12 for the Fast Length, 26 for the Slow Length, and 9 for the Signal Length, which are the standard parameters used in classic MACD analysis.
