Inside Bar Breakout Failure
Apr 1, 2016

The Inside Bar Breakout Failure indicator identifies and highlights specific price action patterns where an initial breakout from an inside bar range fails and reverses, providing traders with potential exhaustion or trap signals.
Usage
The indicator can be used to identify potential market reversals or "fakeouts" following a period of consolidation. When an inside bar (a bar contained within the high and low of the previous bar) is formed, the market often awaits a breakout. This tool highlights instances where that breakout occurs but fails to maintain momentum.
- Bullish IBBF: Occurs when price breaks below the low of an inside bar but subsequently closes back above that low. This is often interpreted as a bullish rejection or a "bear trap."
- Bearish IBBF: Occurs when price breaks above the high of an inside bar but subsequently closes back below that high. This is often interpreted as a bearish rejection or a "bull trap."
Traders typically look for these signals near key support or resistance levels to confirm potential turning points in the market.
Details
The script functions by first identifying a valid "Inside Bar" where the current high is less than or equal to the previous high and the current low is greater than or equal to the previous low. It also ensures the setup is not an "Outside Bar."
The "Failure" logic is triggered on the bar immediately following the inside bar:
- Bearish Failure: The high of the current bar exceeds the high of the previous inside bar, but the close of the current bar returns below that high level.
- Bullish Failure: The low of the current bar drops below the low of the previous inside bar, but the close of the current bar returns above that low level.
Settings

- Bullish Inside Bar Breakout Failure Color: Change the color of the bar and arrow used to highlight bullish failure patterns.
