The Directional Flow Signals indicator provides a clear visual representation of market bias by identifying shifts in directional pressure through the Directional Movement Index (DMI).

Usage

The Directional Flow Signals tool is used to identify trend transitions and current market bias by analyzing the relationship between DI+ and DI-. It helps traders filter market noise and focus on the dominant side of the market without needing a separate oscillator panel.

  • Directional Bias: When DI+ is greater than DI-, the chart displays bullish colored candles, indicating upward pressure. Conversely, when DI- is greater than DI+, the chart displays bearish colored candles, indicating downward pressure.
  • Trend Shifts: A "Bull Shift" signal is generated when directional control moves from bearish to bullish (DI+ crosses above DI-). A "Bear Shift" signal is generated when directional control moves from bullish to bearish (DI- crosses above DI+).
  • Confirmation: These signals are most effective when used as a confirmation layer alongside other technical analysis tools such as support/resistance levels, volume profile, or market structure.

Details

The script is built upon the Directional Movement Index (DMI) system. It calculates the DI+ and DI- values over a user-defined lookback period and applies smoothing to reduce volatility in the output.

The execution logic monitors the crossover points of these two components. By coloring the candles directly on the price chart, it provides an intuitive way to track the active trend. While the ADX (Average Directional Index) is calculated as part of the standard DMI function, this specific script focuses on the directional components (DI+/DI-) rather than the trend strength (ADX) to trigger signals and color changes.

Settings

  • Show Directional Shift Signals: Toggles the visibility of the "Bull Shift" and "Bear Shift" labels on the chart.
  • DMI Length: Sets the lookback period for the Directional Movement Index calculation.
  • DMI / ADX Smoothing: Adjusts the smoothing period applied to the DMI values to filter out minor fluctuations.
  • Bullish Candle Color: Customizes the color of the candles and labels when DI+ is dominant.
  • Bearish Candle Color: Customizes the color of the candles and labels when DI- is dominant.

FAQ

How do I interpret the "Bull Shift" and "Bear Shift" labels? These labels represent a crossover in the DMI system. A Bull Shift indicates that bullish pressure has overtaken bearish pressure, while a Bear Shift indicates that bearish pressure has become dominant.

Does this indicator work best in all market conditions? Like most crossover-based indicators, Directional Flow Signals performs best in trending markets. In sideways or low-volatility environments, the DI+ and DI- lines may cross frequently, leading to false signals.
