VWAP Price Channel
Aug 26, 2025

The VWAP Price Channel indicator combines the logic of traditional Donchian Channels with volume-weighted average price (VWAP) calculations to create dynamic support and resistance levels. By anchoring VWAPs at periodic highs and lows, this tool aims to provide a more responsive projection of price action compared to the flat levels typically found in standard price channels.
Usage
The Usage section highlights how this tool can be applied for trend identification and risk management.
- Trend Tracking: The indicator features a "trend-flipping" display. When the price hits a new high, it initializes a bullish outlook, often colored green. Conversely, hitting a new low shifts the bias to bearish, often colored red.
- Trailing Stop Loss: The upper and lower VWAP lines function as dynamic trailing stop levels. Unlike standard Donchian Channels that remain flat until a new peak/trough is established, these lines adjust based on volume and price movement, potentially offering better exit points during trend exhaustion.
- Breakout Levels: While in a trend, the opposite VWAP level (the one not acting as the current support/resistance) continues to generate at new highs or lows. These levels can be interpreted as breakout points for trend continuation.
Details
The VWAP Price Channel functions by detecting new highs and lows within a specified lookback period (similar to a Donchian Channel). Each time a new extreme is reached, the indicator re-anchors a VWAP calculation to that specific candle.
A unique aspect of the implementation is the "Start + Change" logic. To prevent the VWAP from lagging too far behind price and becoming less relevant than the raw Donchian levels, the script calculates the change in VWAP and applies it to the most recent price extreme. This ensures the channel remains tight to price action while maintaining the smoothing benefits of volume-weighting.
Settings
- Timeframe: Allows users to calculate the indicator based on a different timeframe than the current chart.
- Length: Sets the lookback period used to identify the highest highs and lowest lows for anchoring the VWAPs.
FAQ
How do I use the VWAP Price Channel for entries?
While the script focuses on trend-following and stop-loss placement, traders often look for price to hold above the lower green line in an uptrend or stay below the upper red line in a downtrend as a sign of trend strength.
What is the difference between this and a Donchian Channel?
A standard Donchian Channel stays flat until a new high or low is made. This indicator uses VWAP to "cut the corners" of those flat sections, providing a sloping line that adjusts based on volume and price activity.
